.nif problem

I always thought the two handed swords looked way too long. I wanted them to simply be slightly shorter than one handed swords. So I thought i'd edit the iron longsword. I exported the .nif with fomm bsa browser and opened it in nifskope, exported it as .obj. Opened that .obj in maya, edited it, exported it as obj, imported it into nifskope, saved it as a .nif again, and put it in the meshes folder in the data folder of skyrim. And then I started the game. The sword gave ye olde red thingy with the ! in it error mesh. I thought it'd be so simple . . but apparantly not. How do I make the mesh show up? All I did to the file was import it and export it, edit it in maya, move the top vertices slightly down, and save it.

EDIT: Never mind, it's too much trouble for such a minor change.
