Max number of save games?

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 10:38 am

All,

I have a habit of making frequent savegames. I am already up to save #303. Will the save game counter correctly push to a 4th digit?

Does anyone know if the number is merely set in the title? Basically if I archive all my saves and then rename 303 to the same name but with the number in the file title altered to 100, will the next savegame be 101 or 301?

Thanks

Dunno but damn why do you have sooo many saves I probly have 15. My process is I'll use the same save file probly 5-10 times then I'll ovewrite the oldelst save file and then use that....rinse and repeat the process.

Well, I save when I find somewhere new, like a ruin or a fort. Then when I move forward 10 feet and I get the "discovered whiterun stables" or whatever, I might save again. I might save before and after I take a quest. I save before I sell, in case I accidentally buy or sell a bunch of stuff I didnt mean to. Quicksave used to suffice, except once I quicksaved and the game crashed and my quicksave was messed up. I also save at convenient points during adventures; maybe like before I start killing bandits in a fort; then after the outside bandits are dead, I save; and before/after each fort tower or etc.

As for using the same save over and over, if the game is like Oblivion, it will use the same file but it still increments the gamesave number. So I will still have the same problem.

I guess I need to do some experimenting when I get home.

Thanks for the reply!

Why not? It's probably around 1000 (but may be limited by console limitations—can you say pandering boys and girls?)

I keep a lot of saves because in a new game I often go off on a track I regret and go back a ways and start over. I also like to keep a record. Although the game may slow down while saving if there are more than 400 or so in the folder. I just move them out except for the first and last couple of saves.

i always keep a save just before and just after character creation for when I want to start a new game.

On the PC there is no limit that I have run into -- in Oblivion you could have over 10000 (actually it is probably either a 16 or 32 bit space that the number is saved in so the limit would be 2^16 = 65,536 or 2^32 = 4,294,967,296 save slots - since it is definitely not an 8 bit storage space or you could only have 2^8 = 256 saves !! (or the amount of HDD space you have available whichever is reached first !!) -- plus if you do ever reach a limit then just move them to a backup folder and leave the last one in the folder - then keep going --- The game creates a new save by incrementing the highest number that is in the folder so if you create a save and rename it to 9999 the next save you make will be 10000 - so removing the saves to another folder and renaming the one remaining save to 1 would start you over again.

Some people say they experience slowdowns after a certain number of saves in the folder but I have never noticed it - though they do load slower as you get later in the game due to having a larger size and thus more to load. I also keep all of my saves for each character in a separate folder so I can use them for mod testing by just renaming the backup folder name from the charactenamesaves folder to saves. ( this helps when you want to test different character levels in your mod )

They game has an autosave every xx minutes setting so if you set that to 5 minutes - it does not remove you from the immersion but you only lose at mx 5 minutes of play if you die ( this game seems to have you die more often than OB ever did since some traps can kill you at mid levels instantly if you step on the wrong spot in a dungeon\cave !) -- I'd hate to try playing Dead is dead in this version of the game (at least on the first play through )

Thanks for all the replies. I will try changing the save number after moving/backing up the files.

As for saving why does that break immersion? My hands do the save game pattern almost reflexively now, so I almost dont notice I am doing it.

As for reloads, I doubt I have reloaded more than 10 times, and at least half of those were just because I screwed up and clicked "take all" on my home chest by mistake, and didnt want to tediously put back 100 ingredient stacks and 50 books.

My immersion is fine. :)
