Problem completing quests?

Is there anyone else running into the problem where they can't proceed with quests because the game doesn't register when you've done something? Most notable is investigating the murdered lady in Windhelm. I 'examine the scene', talk to Jagrif or whatever his name is, then I talk to that lady in the halls of the dead, and it won't let me go forward from there.

I'm afraid of continuing the game if I know that more quests have problems like this. Has anyone else run into this? If so, did you find a work-around for the time being?

Thanks!
Steve

Quest bugs are part and parcel to Bethesda's open world RPG's. If you're worried about quest bugs I recommend using the quest guides on uesp.net. The Website however contains, spoilers and how to complete quests, so if you don't want stuff spoiled then avoid it, but the site has extensive lists of possible quest breaking bugs.

Other than that I recommend creating and using a player journal you can edit frequently on a computer or smart phone. Keep track of the quests you receive, and quests you've completed, that why if you run into a bugged quest you know exactly which quest, and what the name of the quest is, so it can be reported on here in hopes Bethesda can fix it. If you run into any glitched quests that you can't complete even a patch won't fix it, you'll have to restart the game to finish glitched quests if a patch does indeed fix them.

What exactly is your problem there? I, too, thought something was wrong until I remembered that the guard had mentioned a blood trail running away from the crime scene.;)
I guess that's what you get when you get used to always being pointed in the right direction...
