My BugWish List

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 2:05 pm

I've been playing Skyrim since Friday night, and overall I love the game.

Here's my list of bugs/gripes/wish list. These are a combination of immersion breaking things I've noticed, plus things I wish were implemented in a future patch or DLC:

- The old water surface x-ray bug that lets you see perfectly clear underwater when just at the surface. This was one of first things I tried.
- No breathe meter while underwater
- The river banks are missing the soft water edges
- No waves on the ocean
- Too many low-res images
- Jaggy shadows
- Shadows jump every few moments
- No destructable items. Paper doesn't burn, most cobwebs don't burn.
- No weapon or armor repair
- Auto health regen. I don't mind slow regeration over time, but it's too much like Call of Duty
- No damage taken while standing on fire sources like campfires, etc.
- Enemies do not react to being set on fire
- No crossbows (again)
- Invisible barriers. Really?
- Draw distance is still a problem
- Landscape tiling is still a problem
- No DX11?
- Still only 32-bit? This one really surprises me.
- Infinite light sources like candles and wall mounted torches/sconces. Hmmm... my torches burn out in few moments.
- Light sources are not interactable (ex. lighting candles)
- NPCs do not react to bad weather conditions like rain/snow
- Pershible food items never spoil. How cool is it to find a nice fresh apple in treasure chest down in an ancient dungeon. Seriously people.
- Khajiit tails wag even when they're dead. This was in one of the keeps where they were already dead. Weird.
- Key-binding needs some major improvement.
- Dragons are just too weak. This is long established and standard RPG fair -- they are always at the top of the food chain.
- No real transparent glass type windows. I really thought we would have gotten past this by now
- Ability to take screenprints without including the cursor and nav bar

Things I think are awesome:
- It's still not a MMO. Amen.
- Weather effects and the lighting on the horizon are breathtaking at times.
- I can denock an arror. Good grief, finally.
- The dungeons: Amazing.
- The large variety of item crafting that's available.
- The level of interaction with companions. Finally.

Here are my system specs. Since Friday, I've only had two CTDs, and I think both were heat-related, so overall it's been very stable experience for me.
- Gigabyte Sniper
- Intel i7-970
- 24 GB RAM
- EVGA 580 GTX x 2 in SLI, using 285.27 drivers
- HP LP2475w 1920x1200 monitor
- WIndows 7 64 Ultimate
- 2 x 64 GB Crucial M64 in raid 0
- 2 x 1 TB Western Digital in raid 0

I'll throw in my 2 cents, mainly because I'm bored and you made some observations I wanted to chime in on. Your stuff is in bold white, mine is in lime green (cuz I love lime green!). :P

- No breathe meter while underwater
Not only this, but also the lack of an visual indicator for spells that are active, especially for spells you've cast on enemies but also self-buffs. I don't play a spell caster, but I have in other games, and have seen the complaints on the boards. I'm really surprised the only way to check this is deep in the menus with no option to display them on the main HUD.

- Too many low-res images
Completely agree here, especially for a game of this (potential) caliber. There also seems to be some issue with LOD or something. Everything seems backwards. The closer you get to objects or shadows, the worse it starts to look. It seems like the low res are used for up close, and high res for distance.

- Jaggy shadows
- Shadows jump every few moments
Check. Also noted above. There are some workarounds, but they don't always work for everybody. I'm one of those. It's the worst indoors for me. Outdoor ones are mostly tolerable with the INI changes I made. Still, it's pretty ridiculous the level of tweaking we all have to do just to get them to look alright.

- No destructable items. Paper doesn't burn, most cobwebs don't burn.
Think they told us this up front. It's not really a change from past titles, so I'm not really too surprised or disappointed. However, contrary to Oblivion, most of the decor in the game cannot be interacted with. I'm pretty sure everybody remembers playing with the hanging chains in the prison cell at the start of Oblivion. In Skyrim, running through the keep, I tried that again. No dice. Can't mess with anything except activators and objects you can pick up. Feels like we're going in reverse here.

- No weapon or armor repair
That was announced in advance too. I realize this is a wish list, and it might be doable from a mod, but they were pretty adamant about it. And apparently there were plenty of players who liked this decision. I wasn't one of them.

- Auto health regen. I don't mind slow regeration over time, but it's too much like Call of Duty
There is already a mod out for removing or reducing health regen. I think that's the realm it's going to remain in as well. I think it's too fast also. I preferred the older TES method, where you pretty much had to wait or sleep to regenerate your health (aside from using a potion or magic of course). "Dumbing down" was heavily abused on this forum, but this is one item I really think that does apply to.

- No damage taken while standing on fire sources like campfires, etc.
Don't think this was in the other titles either, not that I can recall at least. My memory isn't the best though. It does happen in other games though, and pretty sure it would be easy to mod. Just have to add a script to anything you want affected.

- No DX11?
- Still only 32-bit? This one really surprises me.

I think it's safe to say this wish won't be granted. Somebody can correct me if I'm way off base here, but I think this is because the game needed to work on the 360, not a next-gen console. The 360 is getting pretty old now, and DX11 and 64-bit is still pretty much the new thing for PCs and games. If this game was developed separately and/or solely for the PC, I think there's a high chance we would've gotten at least DX11, maybe 64-bit too. But since it wasn't, and since it was developed for the 360 first, then ported to PC, and then not even optimized for the PC... we get neither. I guess the cost wasn't worth it to them for separate engine development.

- Infinite light sources like candles and wall mounted torches/sconces. Hmmm... my torches burn out in few moments.
Yeah, been that way in past titles and most other games too. It's pretty obvious and illogical. But then I suppose everywhere you went would be dark (unless it was populated by sentient beings) and you'd have to keep lighting all the lamps/torches. In some cases, that might actually be cool, especially in ancient, abandoned locations. This would also be pretty easy to make a mod for.

- NPCs do not react to bad weather conditions like rain/snow
If by NPCs you mean sentient beings, then yeah that's messed up.. because they told us this would be the case. Several reviewers even stated NPCs were running from rain (although I didn't see anything mentioned for snow, and really wouldn't expect them to run from snow). If you mean other NPCs, like creatures and whatnot, that kinda makes sense. Most animals don't run from rain or snow.

- Pershible food items never spoil. How cool is it to find a nice fresh apple in treasure chest down in an ancient dungeon. Seriously people.
I'm with you there. It's been rather silly in the past TES games too, but these aren't the only ones. Would make for a cool mod though, I think. However, I did find a tomato that looked pretty rotten. And it had no ill effects for eating it (and had a value, so somebody must've wanted it). Unless that's just how all tomatoes look in this game. I only recall finding the one so far. It was sort of dark on top and looked mushy. Yuck.

- Khajiit tails wag even when they're dead. This was in one of the keeps where they were already dead. Weird.
I suspect that's part of the physics problems we're seeing. I saw that from time to time in Oblivion, too, both on Khajiit and Argonians. Their tails would start convulsing violently when they died and hit the ground, especially if they were near some other solid objects.

- Key-binding needs some major improvement.
Agreed!

- Dragons are just too weak. This is long established and standard RPG fair -- they are always at the top of the food chain.
I knew this was going to happen when I first heard dragons would be in the game. *IF* there's a dragon or dragons, it should be rare and a mega-boss. Seriously, if the player can go around whacking dragons, there's no reason anything else should provide even a moderate challenge. Unless of course, the dragons are portrayed contrary to traditional lore and are really all bark, no bite. Apparently giants are the big dogs these days. Dragons are nothing compared to the screens and vids I've seen of people getting punted by giants.

- No real transparent glass type windows. I really thought we would have gotten past this by now
I would assume this is because everything is still separate cells. You can fake it though for sure. ThreadWhisperer did it with one of his houses back in Morrowind. You can see inside the house from outside, and vice versa.

Cool list. Had some stuff I'd never really thought about before, including some cool mod ideas for the community to mull over.
