Cross faction chat?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 6:49 am

Does anyone know if the different factions will be able to chat with each other? Most games with 2 factions don't allow you to do so. I'm interested to see how it will work with 3 factions. It would be a shame if they didn't allow it.

I love Blizzard did with Realid. Allowing people to not only chat. Ross faction, but across different games too.

I don't see the problem !!! I mean maybe we should have an option to keep our chat "race" specific, as in if I'm an altmer I should be able to "code" my chat to look like gibberish to other races but normal text to other altmer....

In theory it works best if you can't, but there was one common language back then. So a lot of people have been asking and there hasn't been an official answer.

all in all I would not care how they do it tbh

since I will kinda stick with the altmer anyways :P, the "lesser" races mean nothing to me other than the possibility of scholastic interest or if I'm feeling adventurous... http://rlv.zcache.co.uk/like_a_sir_monocle_rage_face_meme_poster-r446f9252c4f44731a526508efef3413f_a21y_400.jpg?bg=0xffffff

An option would be okay. I don't like the idea of not allowing it completely, though. A lot of people roll a particular faction just to chat and hang out with their friends.

I didn't even think about grouping and guilds/ clans. Will they only allow these with the same faction? Balancing even 2 factions has proven to be a hard task for other mmos.

Honestly, DAoC didn't allow this at all. But in ES, there's 3 different factions that all supposedly speak the common tongue. Likely, what I'm guessing they'll do, is allow other factions to "chat" when they're next to eachother (like a /talk command), but won't actually allow them to message eachother. That's how I'm hoping they do it as well.

Seeing that 2 different factions may choose to form a temporary alliance in order to gang up on the 3rd faction, I find it reasonable to assume that we will be able to talk to eachother. ;)

as long as i can still yell out enemy locations to all ally's in the zone without the enemy knowing what i'm saying i wouldn't mind having a common tounge.

Reasonable indeed, but not necessarily true. What they meant by 2 factions being able to gang up on a 3rd faction is the simple dynamic of having 3 factions, and if one gets overpowered, the other two can "unofficially" stop attacking eachother and focus on the 3rd one. This was how it often worked in DAoC, but with NO means of communicating between factions whatsoever...

How did it work then? Simple, each server had a dedicated forum where people from top alliances in different factions could speak with one another. And so they talked to eachother, formed alliances, and coodinated attacks OUTSIDE the game entirely. It may be the case here, but it's a reasonable to assume that at least each faction will be able to "/talk" to eachother, and therefore communicate with enemy players that are "physically" standing nearby, though I find it highly unlikely that enemies will be able to message one another... Another way they communicated was that some people had multiple accounts, so they could log out of say their main "Midgard" account on that server, and log into another account that had a Hibernia character on that same server, and therefore act as an envoy for communication. That was the way they were able to communicate with people in-game...

So basically you found ways to communicate with the others factions anyway? If people are going to go to such lengths to talk to the other faction, why not just allow it?

Just my thoughts.

This. The fact that Matt Firor would even suggest two of the factions forming a temporary alliance to overthrow a third, larger one suggests inherent capacity to communicate. The fact that ZeniMax Online is encouraging player-driven politics also means that communication is essential for the game and the community. How can you truly have a war, build alliances, and build a strong community if no one can understand each other?

Well, it's a little cheasy for seperate factions to be able to message eachother from anywhere in the world all the time, it takes away the "this is the enemy" feeling, and makes it feel more like everyone is playing a game. Again, being able to talk to characters standing near you is one thing, being able to message them from anywhere in the world is a different matter entirely. :)

For those wondering how it was handled previously, in DAoC you had two factions team up to take down a third, most of the time. You couldn't chat with those from that realm. People just found ways around it or understood the politics of the game.

Would be interesting if you can only talk to people from other factions in Private chat as opposed to general chat. This might help facilitate that separation of faction while still allowing communication. This way you would have to 'know'(Player name)someone from another faction in order to talk to them. This might even be better if there was a limit to the number of the opposing faction you could talk to via an in game opposite faction friends list. For instance, you can only talk to someone from another faction if you add them to that friends(communication sound better?) list.

To simplify that and streamline that a bit.

Only private chat between factions unless you are right next to each other. You can communicate with any number of people from another faction if they are near you but they must be on your 'Associate' list in order to PM them in game. This associate list would comprise of a maximum of 30 people from other factions(maybe more maybe less, idk what would be a good number tbh). As opposed to your Friends list which can have as many people from your faction as you want in it.

That is probably a rubbish idea but meh.

Cross Faction chat wont be there simply for PvP. In a 3v3 PvP envirement this could be deadly. As it could mean one Faction with a mole in it would have a tough time defending its 2 fronts.

This because organizing an attack with another faction against the other requires communication and also i cant remember which interview it was but I'm 90% sure they said there is no language gap also

Like I keep saying, no language gap, but also no ability to message other players. At least that's what we can hope for.
