Most obscure place you've seen something made.

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 2:45 am

I'm talking about the labels you find on various products the say: "Made In..." most often followed by "China"

Yesterday I was looking at a tub of cake icing and the label said "Made In Uruguay". Easily the strangest place I've seen something made.

Well, I've a porcelain cup a friend gave me as a souvenir when he went to Puerto Rico. I looked at the bottom of the cup and it said Made in Brazil.

There was a time when it seemed like everything was made of the bloody stuff. I'm sure my school was entirely constructed of it, though it wasn't immediately obvious.

East Germany wasn't too obscure, though: I seem to recall a lot of cameras came from there.

In my case, old. :P Old enough to remember when it still existed, anyway... and when people had outside toilets, tin baths etc.

I saw love made once on top of a mountain, only it was odd because only 2 people were working on it, must be a family business or something.

Well, you learn something new everyday.

I had no idea USSR ever even made any products let alone exporting them.

I think my old Zenit camera says the same. It's actually quite well made... except for the fact that someone forgot to line the inside with non-reflective material, so it takes terrible photos. I suppose I could've painted the inside with matt black paint, but I've only just thought of it, about 25 years later.

Edit: I have however acquired an adaptor to use its 58mm lens on my Canon 5D. It's really pretty good.

What did you think they ate, drove around in, wore, or did in their spare time?

This particular watch was made in the USSR, and sold on the western markets by a British company that imported cheap soviet goods.

Well, at least it runs on time. Not the decadent time of the Bourgeois, but time nonetheless. And I'm sure people (and tanks) stay down when you hit them with it .

They ate portraits of Nikita Krushcev, rode radioactive mutant donkies, wore animal skins and burnt effigies of Reagen afaik.

Family guy tought me that all Russians are bears on unicycles.

I suppose the most obscure things I own are coins made in countries that no longer exist, such as Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and the USSR.
If were not talking about where it is made, but just that its slightly odd, I own a model toy of the space shuttle Challenger, which my dad bought me before the tragic accident and a medieval oil lamp shaped like a satyr that was crudely de-heithened (or possibly sanctified) by carving (scratching really) 'DEVS ET LVMEN' in it.

The jumper I'm wearing had a tag saying "made in Ireland". I was quite surprised at that, I don't see Ireland on clothes tags very often.
