Sad sad news (if true)

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 11:28 pm

Some painful news from Pete Hines at E3. If this is true, I wish to [censored] they told us this months ago..... Perhaps all they have for us is the devopment toolset. No DLC. Sounds like there never was any DLC. Please confirm GStaff.

Pete Hines says it's [RAGE] not atop the agenda right now but they're "looking at doing some things" with it; its future is "still TBD." When gamers talk of id the "first thing" mentioned is Doom 4.

Enough with the vague implications, rumors and quotes taken out of context.
Let's just wait and see what QuakeCon brings.

I did say "(if true)".

You must realise, it can be quite hard for some id fans to be given nothing in terms of developer feedback. I've been around since ids beginnings. I've been a fan for twenty plus years and It wasn't always like this.

So yeah, I agree that Quakecon is the next stop but it sure as hell ain't gonna stop me posting articles I come across, especially if it's an interview from Bethesda's head of marketing when the subject is RAGE. Especially when the developer has been tight lipped for over eight months.

This is interesting - it chimes with my own personal feeling that history is going to show Rage as a brave experiment that didn't quite work out. I hesitate to say "failed" because a lot of folks (including me) got a quite enjoyable gameplay experience from it, but - despite that - the particular tradeoffs that id chose for it were perhaps a wee bit premature. All the same, I'd give it another year or 2 before anyone can really write anything that sums up what happened here.

It's not that anything's happened, or that they don't care about RAGE, it's as simple as the fact that they want to get Doom4 out the door, and as quickly and full of quality as possible.

They did mention before that now that the engine is done, games will be out the door much sooner. They're just trying to prove it's possible. So of course they're going to prioritize with Doom4 over Rage, because even as Rage released, most fans still wanted Doom4, and cared more about Doom4.

The only sad thing is that I really enjoyed Rage, so now it doesn't feel so great to have the priority shown :/

This shouldn't be a suprise to anyone who remained "objective" to this game. In my opinion it was not a complete failure of a game..the artwork was very well done and the cities look beautiful.

However it wasn't as epic as some would propose and face facts the sales of the game stunk. You can try to defend it (sales figures) but you just wind up accomplishing nothing. It didn't sell well. If the main game doesn't sell well they will not invest in DLC.

When Fallout NV came out people liked the game and it sold enough to warrant DLC. And you know what...they kept their fans INFORMED about what was coming down the pike...that makes a big difference. All four DLC's came out in a timely manner and everyone was happy.

When you keep promising info and don't deliver then say well we ourselves aren't privy to the inner sanctum info...well people lose trust.

You can try and rationalize holding out hope for DLC all you want but its pretty clear at this point that it isn't happening. Any game with half decent sales gets DLC nowdays; most of the time they are already working on it when the game ships. That we haven't even had an announcement this long later . . . well, let's be realistic. Whatever development had started on DLC was probably suspended with the rough launch and those ATI issues and once they saw the sales they just never bothered starting it back up. Skyrim came out after Rage and has an announcement and relatively imminent release date for something that is bigger then typical for DLC. That and the Doom 4 talk tells you all you need to know.

Too bad. Rage has its issues but I would have liked to see more of the setting.

Marketing guy wants to focus on hype building for the next release at E3, not altogether surprising

I don't quite get the "sales stunk" argument - according to VGChartz it's at about 2.5 million - that's probably not as high as they would have hoped, and definitely not as high as some of the major-selling blockbusters, but it's not quite "stunk" either. Remember that Doom 3 was id's highest selling title and that just made 4-odd million - id don't do huge selling titles, and any claim that the "sales stunk" just reads like nonsense.

I'd say Bethesda are just gonna let RAGE and everything that came with it cool off a bit. Put everyone and everything into making Doom 4 as good as can be. Validate the mega texture tech. Hell, if they can't make a hit from id's biggest and most well known franchise, they shouldn't have bought them. They need to justify their investment. Then they can revisit RAGE.

We're moving into a new Doom era. Let's hope it's Awse-Bawls!

Rage will be a lost gem, its sad when folks get caught up in the beaurocracy of corrporations and forget to relate to the fans that remain loyal. Doom 4 will be great, im sure it will be a game changer, but in the end each property strangles in the down time. I for one was turned off by Quake, just wasnt my thing, Halo, same thing. For a game like Rage to rekindle my childhood sense of wonder and obcession is rare. I really hope they can get the whip cracking in their sweat shop to deliver, I personally know an army of fans who would work for next to nothing just for the satasfaction of making sure something surfaces.
