UT3
Well, I've played UT3 and it was loads of fun, awesome game.

I think what he meant though, is that it's not a "real" game, and it's not. I wouldn't pay as much for any UT game as I would for Rage, as UT is a game that screams "I am an engine test dummy!"

I thought it came with quite a decent amount of content. It is a tournament style game, it always will be, but I think it is a "real game", just a different take on the FPS genre. I know what you mean though, it certainly is an engine tester/show off, but I don't think that necassarily stops it from being a real game.

This is great news! I look forward to stumbling through and learning how to use the editor.

A single, really good mod can inject all kinds of new life into the player base, as we have seen with the DayZ mod driving 500% sales increase for Arma 2.

Never heard of that format. I guess modding the models is out the window . If I can just mod the weapon properties I will be happy.

No ... its an SDK ... most of things is possible and carmack said he didnt disallow .. but making a new megatexture requires significant pre-knowledge ... hopefully there are some help files ... becuse the main point of the release is getting potential future hires to be familiar with id tech.

expect surprises

I'm pretty positive that the megatextures are only used for area textures. Just think about it for a second; how could the characters and walls have different texture resolutions if they used the same texture file?

Carmack actually noted that it will be upgraded to do virtualization on everything else as well as you mentioned, characters models ..etc, but i am not sure I can recall if that was planned for doom4 version of idtech5 or for idtech6

Completely disagree with that, it had great gameplay, I don't know specifically what you are talking about (cos you didn't actually point anything wrong out with it). And anything you don't like in it was more than likely fixed in one or more mods from the close to thousands that exist. If RAGE has half the modding community that UT3 has, then I'd be stoked.

By the way, i play it on PC, still. It looks beautiful, still. Biggest problem with it is the crappy team AI, but really that is all I can think of.

I was talking about gears of war series.

Wonder why I was so outspoken and desperate in this forum on noumerous occasions ... hopefully it'll be out before Starcraft 2: heart of the swarm.

One of the things I tried to explain to the commumity manager that raw waiting time or delays werent an unbearable problem for me and some others, infact lack of actual progress or status report was the main issue in actual proof not just words and estimating how much longer will it take ... i wouldnt mind how long the estimate would have been, but being left in the dark is just so annoying feeling and quite negative effect.... but thankfully i found other things that keep me busy in the meantime.

And Id studio is totally diffetent from unreal .. i dont think its close to sandbox
3D free roam kind ... but we havent seen a lot, that was just a zoom in in the trailer.

I don't think there's a need to compare UDK or idStudio as far as technology goes, both will have their negatives and positives.

As far as the comments re licensing, idsoftware used to be the kings. Carmack was fond of saying "we'll always be one step ahead", funnily enough once UE started landsliding it Carmack drops out and says he's glad he doesn't have to maintain a codebase for other people and can take more risks. I'm not fond of where Epics direction and haven't been keen on the oversaturation of the engine, but to bring in a console bias is absurd. Both support multiple platforms, only one allowed modding out of the box, only one supported a modding community, only one allowed mods on multiple platforms (PC/PS3).

Maybe if Carmack did have to maintain the engine and improve on it for other people we would have seen more substantial results like we used to. To try and say other devs have dropped the ball is laughable even if I'm not totally fond of their growth, idsoftware are the ones who dropped the ball big time.

I do agree though that lack of information has been the biggest problem, most people are happy to wait if they know what the plan is.

Yep! I've said this all along. Tell me we'll have DLC in 2013 or whenever and I'm good with that. Tell me there's no plans for DLC and I'm good with that too.

Tell me nothing or worse still, tell me untruths and lead me down the garden path - that pisses me off.

exactly!!.it seems to me they have been leading everyone down the garden path.they should of told us that there was no dlc in the making.i dont understand the logic in doing this at all.ive asked the question yes or no to this and of course its very vague in saying (we are working on a few things relating to rage).i just dont know what to believe anymore

ID Software was the king because everyone prepared to gave that much amount of money, Carmack personally never cared about licensing, he only did it because of business, the technology is very valuable, today's money the licenses are 500.000 $ to a million, not including the technology-royalties.

Carmack said, "okay we'll give you 8 hours to show you how it works, the rest you'll have to figure out your self."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=tjZ6z_vdlBo#t=910s

But Id Software never had any support department at all, which is what EPIC and Crytek invest heavily into, and the differences is just a philosophy, i can't say which one is better than the other because it's differs how you look at it, but personally I have a traditional approach.
