Torchlight 2 discussion

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 8:51 am

Just thought I would start a thread since I could not find one.

I did not buy Diablo 3 because my internet connection is not very stable. Torchlight 2 has offline single player and I enjoyed the first one. For $20 pre-order I figured that that it should be worth the money.

Anyone else excited about this game? :mage:

I like how there are tons of ways to build characters in the original Torchlight. You can even focus character growth around spells you find/buy instead of skills. I can't wait to make crazy builds in 2.

I made it into the beta weekend a while ago. They actually stretched it all the way to the thursday after, so I had a lot of time to play.

The outdoor areas are pretty big, it's nice to explore them. They have some randomly generated stuff on there as well. I also noticed a very large variety in monsters in the 4-5 hours that each playthrough of the beta lasted approximately. I hope they can keep up that variation during the entire game.

Combat feels great. Especially the Ember Mage, the magic is awesome. Even the basic spell you start out with is nice. The Berserker is also pretty crazy after you get a few skill points in the right place, you just smash things to pieces while dual wielding weapons. The nice thing about melee weapons is that they all hit in an arc, even the basic attack. So if you're carrying a big weapon and swing it, it can hit multiple enemies at once instead of just one at a time like in TL1.

Remember how you could send your pet to town to sell all the loot? They now also have a shopping list, so you can buy some basic items (health/mana potions, portal/identify scrolls) without leaving the dungeon you're in.

There are some nice small improvements over the original game: The UI can be scaled and some elements can be hidden. Also In Torchlight 1 every hit you do would show you how much damage it did, so if you did a big AOE attack the screen was covered in numbers. In Torchlight 2 there's an option to change the frequency at which these damage numbers appear. Also items can be identified by right clicking on them directly, which will consume an identify scroll.

Also: Customization of your character's looks and more pets. :D

I can't wait for the release.

I'm getting really interested in Torchlight 2 now, after being pretty disappointed with Diablo 3. Some of the guys behind Runic Games are old Blizzard North guys right? Lan play, online co-op, single player, an editor... Everything that should be in PC gaming that has been disappearing.

I haven't played the original Torchlight, so I might have to pre-order and get the free copy. I had a trial version of FATE on my laptop when I moved here, which was fun and kept me occupied while I didn't have internet, and I guess it was made by one of the founders of Runic Games. So that also gives me some hope.

Maybe make the next thread a Torchlight series thread,

I am new to the Torchlight series since a month ago, where I bought that Steam deal

I'm enjoying the first Torchlight quite well, . At the moment I am terrorising Steam, torchlight.exe, and torched.exe, and not to mention all the save files, with modding, hehehe

I played a fair amount during the open beta weekend, and based on that experience I can't wait to buy Torchlight 2. I did a full playthrough of the beta with an Embermage, and partial playthroughs with the Engineer and Berserker, and found all three classes enjoyable in their own way (although my favorite was the Embermage, followed closely by the Berserker). For me the biggest improvement over the first Torchlight was that in the first game each class tended to pick just one or two killing skills to pump, then the game was just about spamming those skills. In Torchlight 2 the skills are varied enough in how they behave that the gameplay lends itself to having many skills onhand, then picking which ones to use based on the enemy and situation. Add to that cooldowns, fire-and-forget skills, and utility skills, and combat is much more dynamic and enjoyable. Also, since skill damage is now either based on weapon DPS or scales with player level you can have only one or two points in a skill yet still have it be useful (although there are still sigificant advantages to pumping points into skills, both in terms of raw damage as well as skill behavior). Area design is also greatly improved with large open areas linked to more traditional dungeon areas. Enemies are varied, and boss battles feel quite epic. They need to hurry up and release this game so I can give them my money.

The game also felt very polished for a beta. The server window definitely needs some work and I haven't been able to connect to other people's games, but the game itself was solid. There were some minor pet related issues I experienced but that's all.

They're probably pretty close to finishing it.

I kind of hope the game will be harder on the highest difficulty than the original Torchlight. It felt a bit too easy on the hardest difficulty... for me anyway.

Very nice interview with some gameplay footage in the background. Discusses what's been happening in development since the beta, how the release of Diablo 3 has affected the pre-orders of Torchlight 2 (40% increase in daily pre-orders!), replayability with new game plus mode, the improved modding tools, and some general talk about Diablo 3 and other action RPGs in the middle.
