Dishonored on PC "has its own different interface"

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 5:23 am

Interesting little http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/06/20/dishonored-on-pc-has-its-own-different-interface-pc-standards-are-a-religion/.
“Our background is very PC for sure,” said Colantonio. “And now in this game we have a mix of strong console players and fans, and also hardcoe PC people. So both sides are very influential, and in the end, yes, the PC has its own different interface.”
If only Bethesda had done this with Skyrim, the UI is arguably the weakest part of the PC version.

Very happy to hear them say this, just what I was asking for. Not that I would expect any developer to answer any different. But so far I've been impressed with their design approaches in virtually every area so I've faith in them actually sticking to creating a good PC interface.

Great to hear that we will be getting our own interface (unlike skyrim *cough*)

Good to know this after seeing the gameplay videos with hideous gamepad-style radial menu.

I don't mind radial menus. I used the radial for suit mode selection in Crysis 1.

I don't see why some people outright 'hate' them. Was there a radial menu oppression that I missed? Anyway that's a good thing but I hope that PC users can pick which menu to choose or at least make the interface somewhat interesting. The console one looks good.

Radial Menus are good when using a gamepad where you only have thumbsticks and a few buttons but there is no reason to have something like that with kb/m where you can just map commands to keys and access them far more quickly and without the GUI getting in the way.

You don't say...I was asking why people 'hate' them. And radial menus are more stylized as well. Too bad it probably won't be ported onto the PC. I like having key binds and reacting fast and all but I prefer to see the stylized icons. It's too early to speculate on how the PC interface will look like so I don't it, and besides it's a personal preference thing.

Glad to see they are concerned with the PC and they are giving that version the love it deserves.

Tired of straight ports from consoles.

Totally agree on this one. It's bad enough that PC gamers need to pay a ton of money to update their hardware frequently.

In fact you'll have it: on the PC we added a 10 slots belt-like menu in which you can assign the weapon/gadget/power you want to whatever key you want. But to do so, you have to open the quick access wheel (radial menu) and assign shortcuts from there.

To make it short: people who want to use the wheel on the PC will be able to, while those who just want to use keyboard shortcuts will have to open the wheel once in a while to map a new hotkey, and then will forget about it. ;)

I don't think anyone 'hates' them, I think people (including myself) were just worried that the PC would get left out when it came to the ui and controls and simply end up with whatever was used for the consoles rather than what works better for PC and radial menus aren't as well suited to a keyboard and mouse when you can have the option of hotkeys. Good to hear that the option is there for those that want it though.

Personally I don't care how stylized the UI is. A UI should always be about function first and style second. I don't want a skyrim repeat, sure their UI looked nice but that's it, it was a pita to use.

I actually know people that hate them for the reason that it breaks immersion. Also I do agree function first then style. I am glad with what they decided to do for PC.

Eventually we'll be showing more details on the PC UI. We think you'll dig it.
