...A weird question but does it seem bigger and closer to you?

Or am I clearly going insane?

If it's low on the horizon, the atmosphere may be having a slight magnifying effect, perhaps?

Not sure, it isn't up yet. But tonight's Thunder Moon size can differ from other full moons due to its distance from the Earth (appogee and parogee), or when you see it. If it's just rising, it can look larger due to illusion http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2005/20jun_moonillusion/

I shall resist the reference and say that it does seem larger, but only slightly for me. This may be because of my proximity to the equator.

The cheese expands and contracts depending on its position in relation to the sun.

Well, from up here the Earth seems bigger and closer, so you may be onto something.
