Anyone had wisdom teeth out without sedation?

If you have okay pain tolerance it shouldn't really even be that bad for you. From what I can remember most procedures go pretty well and the worst cases you hear about are from people with low pain tolerance and bad procedures like the procedure oldAndy just mentioned. Seriously, how bad was your dentist? My dentist is nothing fancy but he crowbarred all 4 of my teeth out with no trouble...

Be careful on the painkillers though. I wouldn't drink on them especially if you've never taken opioids, you could pass out or stop breathing.

When the bottom ones were being extracted, the dentist used some sort of crowbar to get leverage under the tooth and used way too much force, severely bruising my lower jaw -on both sides. so keep that in mind if you see the mini crowbar being grabbed..
Did you happen to eat crab just before? The dentist may have used gamer instinct.

Hmm... I was going to post some youtube footage of wisdom tooth extraction, but it seems to graphic. Not sure about forum policy regarding that.
Yeah that's not a good idea.

There's a guy in Germany who wasn't pleased with the dentistry nearby so for the past few decades, he's been doing Dentistry DIY with his own tools. He's drilled holes and everything.

It all completely depends on how far they've surfaced, how deep the roots are, and whether or not they're wrapped around your jaw.

Mine were all completely impacted but not wrapped, so they gave me a gabillion shots (my nerves aren't in the correct spots so it's a hit and miss until they numb me), hooked me up to a heart monitor, and then went to town. Personally, they had to cut my gums open, drill the teeth down in the middle until they were in two-four pieces, pulled each out, and then sewed me up with dissolvable stitches. It took about 2 hours and there were only a couple of issues. My bottom right tooth's nerve didn't numb correctly so after they drilled the hole in the middle, they stuck a shot down in it and that was rather uncomfortable. My top right tooth also got stuck, but the doc just put his knee next to my face and yanked that svcker out. I know it sounds horrible, but it was really nothing at all. I did take pain killers for about 2 or 3 days just to get over the soreness of having all that done. (Oh, and DONT DRIVE. Long story short: I wrecked my car 2 days after my surgery.... in my next door neighbor's yard.)

You will be sore, but not in PAIN. And being you're only get two done, your discomfort should only be minimal. Don't be surprised if you do get bruises on your face too though. Some people get them, especially if the roots are deep.

Over all, getting two that are mostly or partially grown in should be a walk in the park. You'll be fine. (But just be prepared that the doc DOES have to do some serious yanking as someone else said above.)

I had all mine out at 17 with sedation. It was a cake walk. Woke up in 45 minutes and asked the oral surgeon when he was going to do it - "You're done already!" :D Had no perception of time going by and after a few more minutes I walked out and was feeling pretty decent. I had very little bleeding or pain and no swelling. Ate normal (but reasonably soft) food that night, took a couple of Vicoden and that was it. Had it done on a Friday and was back in school Monday. I guess its a personal thing, but I don't know why anyone would pass up sedation when it makes it so much easier.

My friend had it done in his late 20s without sedation. He was miserable - also had it done on a Friday, but missed three days of work the following week. He send me a pic of himself and his cheeks were so swollen he looked like Fat Bastard.

Sedation won't effect your healing. If your friend was down and out longer it's because he had harder teeth to remove or just doesn't heal as well as you do.

And some people can't do sedation whether they want to or not. When I had mine done, I had never been put out so the idea scared me a hell of a lot more then having some teeth cut out of my face. So, I stayed completely awake. And honestly, I'm lucky I did. I had to be put out last year for some surgery and almost died. So... a little discomfort or the chance to die... I think I'll deal with some pain.

I just don't want the sedation because it seems like more hassle, with the IV and having to sign a waiver saying I might die, and all this nonsense. The dentist told me that the main reason for sedation is just so the patient stays out of the dentist's way and lets them work. I shouldn't have a problem. Open wide and relax, sounds easy enough.

I had a wisdom tooth and a molar yanked a couple months ago. The pain during wasn't bad. No sedation, just injected Novacaine. The molar was rotting and didn't want to come out, so that involved some crushing and yanking and drilling out of the root. It wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't extremely painful.

My jaw hurt for about two weeks afterward tho.

I've had many oral surgeries including wisdom teeth

it'll hurt like hell, might as well break it to you now :( the Novicane will help, but it won't compare to an IV.

I've only had the IV once and I wasn't a fan of it either so I chose Nov. as well, and it hurt.
