3D Tech Info

Post » Thu Jul 19, 2012 1:50 am

Can anyone recommend some websites for info on hardware for 3D gaming/viewing? Perhaps one with reviews, info on what works well with what...that sort of thing.

Thanks.

The two tech websites I read now and then are http://www.hardocp.com/ and http://www.anandtech.com/, and I feel they offer good indepth graphic card reviews

There's another one I follow more closely, but it's in swedish :P

Thanks Freddo, but I was hoping for something more 3D-centric. When I put 3D in a Google search, most all I get is old pages on 3D acceleration. I know I'd need a new monitor and glasses, but are my 6970's 3D compatible? I don't think so, but it's hard to find out because most info on them doesn't include anything they aren't.

Should I go with nVidia? What are the best monitors in the 24" range? How about a comparo of glasses. That sort of stuff.

IIRC MorrowindFan caught the bug of 3D craze a while back and was looking into monitors and support for it, so you may want to ask him. Not a fan of 3D video myself, it gives me a headache.

Thanks for that Defron. I'll send him a PM.

http://www.amd.com/us/products/technologies/amd-hd3d/Pages/hd3d.aspx page on their 3D technology and http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/tridef-stereoscopic-3d-gaming,3019.html that touches on the subject, including AMD's 3D implementation and how to use it but mostly benchmarks in different games.

http://sites.amd.com/us/recommended/Pages/hd3d-panels.aspx

Do note that AMD's implementation of 3D is a bit more convoluted than Nvidias.

That looks like it'll do the trick for me. Thank you very much Didact. It turns out all I'll need to get is the monitor and glasses.

My experience is limited to my current monitor and hardware, so I'm not really sure about others.

Currently I have a GTX 580 in my machine, paired with an ASUS VG278H 27" 3D LED Monitor. Most PC games will work on it, and 3D Blu-Ray movies will as well, assuming you have a Blu-Ray drive and the proper software. Console games are a bit finicky though. For example, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary works flawlessly in 3D, but Crysis 2 won't work.

I do really like the VG278H, since it has nVidia's 3D vision 2's new lightboost tech. Normally everything is darker with active 3D glasses, but with lightboost it pretty much looks normal.

Well, I've got AMD cards, so I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001472. It's expensive as hell, but it has 120mhz going for it. I need to look around some more.

All 3D screens have to have a 120Hz refresh rate. Using 3D cuts the refresh rate in half, so when you have 3D enabled you're really only getting 60Hz.

Not sure if you're still after the info, but I've found this http://3dvision-blog.com/ useful for 3d gaming hardware information

Thank you Caveman. I still haven't made the purchase yet, so it's all good reading.
