Commodore is BACK!

Post » Tue Jul 24, 2012 11:06 am

I didn't see a thread on this so here it is. I had thought Commodore went the way of the Dodo but apparently I was wrong. They've reinvented the Amiga in a sleek new package with several options. I'm thinking of ordering one just because it's a Commodore and it's an Amiga.

I am however torn on the Windows OS or the Commodore OS. I probably won't be ready to move on it for a few months; perhaps a Christmas present.

Here's the link: http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_AMIGAmini.aspx

What's your thoughts on the re-imagining of the Commodore Amiga?

I see they have a full size Amiga as well. I think there is a new 64 but my phone won't open the link for some reason to confirm it. So then, the question is, Which to order? The Amiga mini, Amiga mio or the 64? I wish I knew the specs of the new 64.

OMG! The 64 is so [censored] badass!

Oh, man, decisions decisions. Looks like Commodore redid their entire line.

Surely, Old Andy and I aren't the only two old fuddy duddys that remember how awesome Commodore was back in the day?

2.13GHz dual core Atom processor, GT 520 graphics card, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD. For $1295. Looks like a pretty expensive gimmick. If you want something compact, you'd be better off with a laptop. Is the case worth that much to you?

Commodore 64 was my first computer. Loved that thing.

I've seen the new 64 before, and it has some serious geek-appeal. The Amiga just seems like an overpriced small-form-factor PC to me, though. You could buy a SFF case and build the same machine for a lot less money. Of course, it wouldn't say "Commodore Amiga" on it.

This is cool. It just seems odd seeing Commodore and terms like USB 3.0 on the same page. :)

So it's essentially a mini-computer that's branded with the Amiga name?

A cool novelty I suppose, but if it's only configured with a Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, is it really worth $1500? No...at least, not to me.

Sometimes, it's not about the equipment but about the memories. I had a C64 growing up. Seeing the new C64 reminds me of my father and playing games like Wasteland, Oregon Trail and many other games. So, to answer your question, yup. It means that much to me. Especially since my dad is no longer around to make memories with. It probably seems pretty stupid but, I think the new Commodore line is pretty cool and if the C64 can run some new stuff as well as all the old 8 bit games I'm in.

Actually, it's configurable and the I7 as well as 16gb is an option.

Not really, the old Commodore went out of business back in 1994. Since then the Commodore brand been owned by a bunch of companies that never really used it for anything, and now this.

I quite agree, I really want the C64x Barebone for $345 and put in my own hardware there. But even so, I can't really justify $345 for a case that I will most likely not use that much, no matter how cool it is.

Yep. It does't use the Amiga OS or anything, it's a PC. And the http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_OS_Vision.aspx is just another Linux distro.

Why not just go on ebay and buy a C64 and save yourself over $1000?

I know...that isn't really my point. I was just saying that the price is astronomical for that kind of hardware.

Because a vintage C64 would be a PITA to get to work with today's devices. I still have a Collecovision and I couldn't get it to work on anything.

What do you mean? Just get a C64 with all original accessories...keyboard, floppy drive (or cassette drive...if you have any games for it :P) etc. I suppose the most expensive part would be the monitor.

The monitor is one of the easiest parts, as it's connected to a TV.

I have all of those things packed in a box somewhere. I'll bet they all still work.

BTW - the computer is the keyboard, so you don't need one of those.

Yeah, with the right convertor you can plug it into any TV with a composite video input.

That's what I'm saying. I couldn't hook my Collecovision up to a standard tv. It wouldn't work. You'd have the same problem with an old C64. At least with the new Commodore line you could hook it up to an HDTV. Sure, the price is a bit high, and one could easily build a PC a lot better for a lot less; my current PC was built in 11/11 for Skyrim for $700 and runs Skyrim in ultra. I really don't have an argument. I completely agree with everything That's been said, but it's an updated C64 that can run Windows as well as the Linux based Commodore OS AND is optimization for the old Commodore 8 bit games. To

Wait, are you referring to the actual new Commodore 64s, or the Amiga mini that was linked in the first post?

And you're right; a number of those vintage consoles aren't compatible with new TVs. But at the same time, those old TVs are pretty darn easy to get. Nobody wants them anymore (aside from the vintage gamer crowd, of course).

Most newer TVs still have the proper inputs to plug in a C64. Mine was always connected via a composite video input, and all of my new LCD HDTVs have at least one composite video input.

I was originally talking about the Amiga, but then I saw that there is a new C64 so I've been talking about the C64 for the last couple of posts. The thread title should probably be renamed, "Commodore is BACK!" so that their entire line can be discussed.

I did link the new C64 as well.

Ah, gotcha. I suppose it is convenient that it's optimized to run with all of the Commodore peripherals, but the Supreme version is still $1300. I guess if you have that kind of money to spend...

Well, right now I'm broke. I'd have to save for it. Which translates into a more probable outcome of forgetting about it in the long run. :)
