Civil WarMain Quest Mix-Up? Help Please!

Post » Sat Jul 28, 2012 2:21 am

I was reading about bugs in Season Unending and the Stormcloak Civil War Questline, and I got a little worried. From what i've read I may encounter one or two quest-breaking bugs. So, I am going to write out what I plan to do, and I would really appreciate it if anyone could tell me whether I will encounter these bugs or not, if my plan will work, if I have missed any bugs and if some of the bugs I describe have been patched, do not exist or have any extra details I may have missed.
I am on 'Return to Galmar' on Joining The Stormcloaks. I am on 'Meet Malborn in Solitude' on Diplomatic Immunity.
I am thinking of completing all Main Quests up to and including Alduin's Wall, because I read that Delphine may attack you on this quest if you are a Full Stormcloak (As in you have completed Joining The Stormcloaks). Then I am going to complete the Civil War Questline, as you cannot do Season Unending unless you have completed The Jagged Crown on the Stormcloak Questline, and I might as well finish it if I can from then on. Then I am going to finish the Main Questline, including Season Unending. (Though I have also read that if you complete the Civil War Questline you skip this quest. Could someone verify?)
So, could anyone tell me if my plan will work? I am ok with doing it in another way if someone suggests that, all I want to do is make sure I can do both the Main Questline and the Stormcloak Civil War Questline without any negative repurcussions, like I miss any quests or lose a title or NPC or something. If any extra details are needed to solve my problems, then I will be happy to give them. Thank you in advance.

I don't know about bugs, but I can verify that Season Unending only happens if the Civil War is still 'active'. As far as I know, you can do Season Unending regardless of where you are in the Civil War quests so long as you haven't finished them (unless Battle for Whiterun is the cut-off there?). I hadn't even started the Civil War quests on my last playthrough when I got to this point, and the only hitch that I ran into was that Ulfric wouldn't talk to me about the Season Unending specific things until I'd gone through the 'hey I want to join the Stormcloaks' dialogue. This didn't actually matter since you haven't officially decided which side you're on until you talk to Galmar (or, I presume, Rikke if you're having trouble in the opposite direction).

"Season Unending" is only available if the Stormcloaks have not taken Hjaalmarch and the Imperials have not taken Winterhold -- obviously, these won't occur unless the player lends aid to a side.

During the negotiations, you may end up changing who owns a number of holds; your faction leader will make you retake those holds, and reprimand you. They will also comment if they feel that you favored the other side during the negotiations, and you will receive a reward if you blatantly favor your side.

After the negotiations until the main quest is done, you may not receive civil war missions.

Delphine only attacks those who have bounties -- I suspect you refer to certain stories of trigger-happy Stormcloaks who assaulted Imperial patrols and found Delphine siding with them?

Should you agaitate the Greybeards through a certain choice you can make later in the main quest, you may need to complete the entire civil war to progress with the main quest.

Well, your replies have helped, but can you give me a straight answer? Will my plan work or not? Thank you though.

I don't know about those bugs. I had heard about them too, but all the information I could find about them was that they were pre-patch 1.4. Can't verify it, though. Mixing up the questlines, playing as a SC, worked for me without problems (on PS3).

If you play as a SC, the Imperials still must control at least two holds for Season Unending to start - Haafingar and another one. It'll be easier for you to negotiate a good deal for your side if you have more holds to choose from - I recommend saving before the negotiations start and play through various alternatives :)

The only thing I think really would mess things up is if you're in the middle of capturing Whiterun, since it's the Jarl of Whiterun who gives you Season Unending, and since there will be a new Jarl when the SCs have captured Whiterun, so...

Having a new Jarl during the negotiations is no problem. I read that too. so you are saying yes?

Sure, why not? Just keep saves in case you have to go back a quest or so. :)
