A Potential Idea -- A Safety Option

Post » Sun Jul 29, 2012 2:03 am

I'm not sure if this has been suggested, but I didn't see a truly relevant topic. It's probably because everyone calls it something else, but I figured maybe it's been a while since we talked about it (and also, I haven't logged on since February so I've missed a lot! Not that you n'wahs miss me.)

So anyway, I've always had the idea of a "safety" option for Skyrim. What is this "safety" option, you ask? Or really, you're thinking. Well, it'd just finally give the ability to kill essential characters and drop quest items. Things that would otherwise annoy people who are willing to accept the consequences of their actions (or more often, fix a bug the brutal way). It could be in the gameplay option panels, like anything else, and there could be one or two. A safety for being able to kill essential NPCs, which you could turn on or off (but naturally would be on to begin with so nothing would change unless the player wanted). The game could give you a disheartening message just like it did in Morrowind (which I really enjoyed when it happened, though to be fair I knew when to expect it). The same safety thing could be applied to quest items, because sometimes they stick in your inventory or I'd just like to sell the damn thing instead of completing the quest for a lesser reward.

So, again, not sure how many times this has been suggested. I don't know what else to call it. I'm not complaining I can't kill NPCs and such, but I do miss it. Especially captains of the guard and such who think they're such big shots!

I completely agree that this should be added. One of my characters is a die-hard patriot of the Empire, and despises the Stormcloaks. I saw one of their camps and killed everyone there, but I can't kill the general there because he is "essential", even though I'm a member of the Legion, not the Stormcloaks. I want the camp to be completely empty, not with one guy standing there, looking at his map.

I agree.

TES is all about freedom and non-linear gameplay, but some things are a bit mood killers, since I expect to be able to kill anything and anyone whenever I want. I don't get it why shouldn't I be able to kill Jarl if I don't like him. I know it would ruin many things, yet it is my free will. It would be awesome if I could do that, and then people go for new Jarl and who knows what. It would be good.
I hope nobody mistakes me for someone who wants to hack and slash trough every single NPC, no, but I was in such situation once in Markarth. I wanted to kill that silvery fool who was so arrogant towards me, despite being in heavy armor and having massive axe on my back, while we were alone. I one shotted him, but he was kneeling down and cursed, then guards appeared, so I killed them, but I couldn't kill him. Meh.

That, too. I'm sick of carrying around 15 of those stupid Stones of Barenziah.

At least Essentials should be turned off if/when they're no longer needed for quests...
