Post » Mon Jul 30, 2012 12:57 am

Steam decided to patch the game while I was playing. I was disconnected and steam had the downloading with a % amount next to Skyrim. WTF, I didn't buy this game have Steam dc me whenever it wants. I shouold be able to choose when and IF I want to patch this game. How can I resolve this issue? Steam support has not responded to a ticket I submitted 6 weeks ago.

Hello, if you right click Skyrim (in your Steam game list, aka library) and select properties and then go into the updates tab, you can choose whether or not you would like the game to be updated automatically.

He probably meant something along the lines of 'Didn't buy it so that Steam could update it at anytime due to not having auto-update turned off' I think, not really sure what DC is supposed to mean.

To the OP, Steam will NOT, repeat NOT attempt to update a game while you are playing it and certainly not if you are disconnected.. Since you're using the files to play the game it cannot very well go about updating them. Are you sure it is updating and not syncing the game after you have exited?

For me it updates Skyrim always right after launching Steam and never during the use of it.

I play Skyrim in offline mode. This allows me to choose when I want to update. I played 1.5 until just a few days ago.

Asking Steam to not automatically update the game merely means that it ignores you and does it anyway.
Keeping Steam offline will stop it doing this but may hinder you from updating or playing your other Steam games or making/downloading purchases in the Steam Store.
The mod Skyrim Unplugged, available on Nexus, enables you to make the "do not automatically update" thing stick just for Skyrim, so that you can be online with other Steam games and make Steam Store download purchases.
Steam is absolutely required for Skyrim, and that mod helps the two of them work well together.
