Polygyny (multiple wives) has a long-standing tradition in human history, especially among the ruling classes. Probably because one woman can only pump out about one baby per nine months, so if a monarch wanted a huge number of descendents, he needed multiple wombs at his command. Same-six pairings are also nothing new, they were commonplace in ancient Greece (usually involving men and boys). What's relatively new is the concept of actually calling it "marriage". Even civil unions are new, for most of its history, same gender pairings have been unofficial in nature. It was there, people just didn't talk about it, often due to anti-sodomy laws.
All marriageable characters in Skyrim are totally bisixual. Depending on the player's race, they might have some pretty funny tastes as well (anyone for a little Khajiit-Orc nookie?)
