TOR going F2P

I'm not big on paying to play games I already bought. That's why I never got in to WoW.

But I'm not sure I like the new way these games are going. "Here, play for free. UP TO A POINT. Now pay us to get the better gear that you can't be competitive without. Oh, and pay us to level up higher than X level also."

I understand they have to make money. They're just not going to make it from me. :P

In this case I don't mind that, I'll probably be bored with the game before I reach that point. :P

Now in LotRO though, there the f2p model pissed me off.

Well then...

It makes me wonder why anyone want to bother with making MMOs in the first place then. Comes off as a quite the high-risk gamble when looking at the expenses of making one. And considering that most MMOs seem to need maintenance long after release as well, they more or less drain more finances over a long time...

Seems to me like it's a practice of using a single dollar in order to earn a single doullar.
Because if done right, they can be pretty damn lucrative in the long-term. Games like Ultima Online, Everquest, WoW, EVE, etc, have made their developers millions. But the thing is, unlike regular games, where people tend to buy and play multiple games at a time, people really only have room in their life for one MMO, and once they've invested a lot of time and money into that one MMO, it'll take something pretty damn special to get them to move from one MMO to another. So just copying the top dog and adding a few tweaks isn't going to attract players to your game; if people want to play WoW, then they'll just play WoW, not your WoW rip-off. Unfortunately, big-time publishers already prefer to stick to what's popular, and the more money that's involved, the more risk-averse they become, and since making an MMO requires a [censored]-tonne of money....

Final Fantasy XI is still doing fairly well, but it'll be interesting to see how Final Fantasy XIV and Dragon Quest X do. The latter will probably be fine in Japan and will also have free play periods daily (intended for kids who can't afford an MMO, but it doesn't verify age), but the Dragon Quest brand isn't nearly as strong in other regions.
What?!

DQ8 was one of the best games I've ever played, then they made DQ9 into a tiny handlheld game, and now DQ10 is an MMO?

I'm never going to get to play another one, am I?
