Teach me to create a better RP character

Post » Wed Aug 01, 2012 6:06 am

I know it's something that can easily be taught but I'm hoping to gain enough knowledge that I can develop a character to play 200 hours with. Rather than multiple characters I go back and forth with for 30-40 hours and start over. I've played a lot of different types of characters and like non sneaking characters the most.

Character ideas:

* heavy armor
* 1H (doesnt matter what type) maybe shield but thinking Magic as well
* im thinking Smithing and enchanting as far as gear and money goes

I think I am describing a battlemage/Paladin/spells sword type character but have 0 idea the difference between those 3.

I need help developing a solid character with a good backstory and understanding of how he would react to situations in Skyrim. I see people posting there character is doing X,Y, and Z in Skyrim today and it's always super creative and they play these same characters for hundreds of hours.

I have very little experience with TES games and RPG in general. I really want to learn and create a great character. I have my lap top open and would love to get some good back and forth going with as many people that want to help create my next character! Thanks for reading :)

The other thing I find myself doing is rushing! I feel like I focus on leveling so much I forget to stop and enjoy Skyrim. If I do go with another heavy armor character I'm taking the steed stone so it will save me some perks but won't level me any quicker.

a paladin sounds interesting. a heavy armored healer, of sorts. Perhaps with some conjuration if you're bending toward some sort of religious voodoo. Thing with crusaders is that you could try to play your best to be squeaky-clean, but the events of the game would put you in a lot of gray-and-black situations.

Perhaps the constant violence will turn her into a jaded, careless traveler. Moving from town to town, doing little favors just so that she could look at herself in the mirror and try to smile. Or perhaps the constant perils and misadventures make her stronger and more willful, like a sword tempering in a fire.

I dont mind not being perfectly clean. I'm thinking Breton or imperial for this character and those are two races I know nothing about. What gods to the pray to? Where do they find them selves in the civil war?

I have a character in my head of somebody who is willing to help most of the time but a total bad ass when push comes to shove. If you are his enamy you will die.

Like it or not, the leveling scaling in this game is real good in the first 20 or so levels. In that, if you just play the game and do things, your character will level up as they need to when they need to. The first step is to ignore leveling. Besides, after level 15, you have just about unlocked everything there is to.

As for Roles, just pick some rules and stick to them. You can have an elaborate back story that describes the rules, or you can just say "This character will not murder or steal" or "This character rob people blind and kill anything that looks at him cross eye'd"

As for restarting after 40 hours or so, that in fact might be the better alternative than one character for 200 hours. In that you can build a Thief, then an Assasin, then a Fighter, then a Mage etc etc and focus these characters on those guilds and quests that are applicable.

try joining some Roleplay sites, or threads. And then attempt to recreate the character you use in the threads.

I've done all those and have yet to complete the MQ so I want to create a character that can at least kill dragons and complete the MQ.

As far as everything else goes I think it would be cool to have a character to come home to and really RP the [censored] out of it. Escape from reality and get lost in Skyrim!

This is how I play, usually. Simple rules like, "I am a thug. Dirty deeds done dirt cheap."

in terms of MQ, though, I usually use that Thug or a jaded Warrior.

Making a character and doing what you think they'd do is the easiest, and most fun way to role play. If you want some rules, make some. There's no true way to role play. Everyone has their own style. I prefer to go in depth with their personality and create extra conflicts, as well as creating long winded backstories in most cases. My current character, J'Lleso, is a thief/ranger/necromancer/light mage. I don't stick to one type of role.

When doing quests that force me to have a follower, I will change tactics and be a certain role for group tactics. I use what the character wants to use and if they think something will be of use despite it not being something they'd normally use, I have to let them use it.

I don't do the eat-sleep stuff, though. That stuff isn't required or needed for everyone. Just do what you feel you are comfortable with.

KF puts it rather well here. The main thing with roleplaying is just to get a good understanding of who and what your character is, and following their "voice" rather that your own.
