Honestly, what sane person would think of introducing hot-headed Nord barbarians into all of the player housing that are permenant unless if you kill them?
You can't fire them, they say "I hope you're not planning any trouble" when you enter your own home, they all have the same cut-and-paste dialogue, they have no backstories. The list goes on.
They were so lazy on that part. They all say the same exact words but at different pitches and tones. Some of them even look exactly the same except hair color.
Who doesn't like forcing a proud and headstrong Nord capitulate to their every whim?
Although, the bug that makes them not recognize that you're the owner of the house their staying in is quite annoying.
Every time I walk into Proudspire Manor, Jordis asks something along the lines of "What is your business here?" and then giggles like a schoolgirl. I think she's just messing with me now.
Why? 11/11/11, that's why. I'm positive Bethesda had something more extensive planned for housecarls - and marriage too - but was forced to cut it in order to meet that deadline.
Don't like them... shut them behind a dungeon door, lock them in a cage. You might not be able to get a follower after that though. Well maybe if you dismiss them and they do the dialouge and then you lock them in. I never got the housecarl for Hjerim, guess I totally forgot to go and do what ever to get him

You're positive? No, you're positively wrong. That deadline means nothing, as its already been almost 9 months since release. If they planned for something more extensive with housecarls and marriage, it wouldve been in by now. They intended those features of the game to be as shallow as they are. Why? Who knows. But a deadline isnt even close to a legitimate reason why.
They are all slightly stronger-than-average followers who perform the necessary function of explaing what a Thane is, and Lydia was likely intended as both an introduction to followers and to help low-leveled players as they travel away from Whiterun to High Hrothgar. From a story perspective, NPC thanes have bodyguards, if not housecarls.
They are aestheticly-diverse but otherwise identical one-handed warriors for those who want such followers. I don't quite know what else you would want.
