Do you like glossyshiny plastic?

Post » Fri Aug 03, 2012 1:12 am

This has been bugging me for a while.

Why is nearly everything made with shiny/glossy plastic instead of (IMO) immensely better matte texture?

My main pet peeve is that it attracts fingerprints like crazy. It looks good out of the box, but after using it for it bit, it starts to look horrid.
My other gripe is that nearly EVERYTHING I have is made out of it. My laptop, xbox, phone, 3ds, etc.

Why do they use it so much? Is it that much cheaper to manufacture?

I dislike the sleek look of laptops and the general appearence of the internet and the defaut aero theme. I think it's to try and make it look "high tech" for Average Joe or Jane.

The formula for the plastic is probably cheaper to manufacture in bulk, at the expense of durability.

I'm not a massive fan of plastics, especially when they are used as material when something else would be much more appropriate.

I like the squeak noise it makes when you rub it. Then I grumble about the fingerprints.

I even prefer matte photo finish to the glossy.

On things like cars or other luxury objects, sometimes the shiny glory is appealing in an eye-catching way, but I agree that in the end, the fingerprint/dirt/scratches issue becomes annoying on anything that's going to be handled/touched/used a lot. It's one reason I can't get into the idea of touch-screens.

Edit: I don't really care about the plastic itself. You can make non-shiny plastic...that's just not the trend right now I guess.

It is a conspiracy to get fingerprints of those that don't use pennies

Do I like shiny plastic? Yes, but I'm a cat so my opinion isn't really valid.

In all seriousness, no. It's just annoying as hell.
