Questions for the Moderators

Post » Sun Aug 05, 2012 3:41 am

Inspired by the History of the Forums thread that was here not long ago, I wanted to make a thread, having asked permission yesterday, specifically to ask you moderators questions about your roles here on the forums and how each of you came to be here with us. After Freddo had posted a short history of the forums, I thought back to it and started to wonder about a few things.. and as I'm still a bit new to the forums myself, I wanted to get a deeper understanding of the moderators group in general.

So, if you all don't mind.. let's get started

What ended up making you a Bethesda fan?

What made you join the forums?

How did you become a Moderator?

As a Moderator, what do you feel is the hardest part of your job?

As a Player, what is your favorite Bethesda game and why?

Fellow forum-goers can of course come in and ask questions of their own, but these are what I came up with.. hopefully as the day passes, more will come in as there aren't many on now.

The old tales speak of a great bear, dragged off in a black van...

What ended up making you a Bethesda fan?
Morrowind. During early '05 I was looking for a game to keep me quiet. Living in Spain there were not that many "English" games available in the stores and as yet the Internet had not reached the village where I was living, heck even cars had a problem. I found a copy of Morrowind and it fitted the type of game I was looking for so started to play it, wandered around Seyda Neen for a while, took the Silt Strider to Balmora and stepped off - that was it, I was hooked.

What made you join the forums?
The internet arrived. I was stuck in Tribunal, couldn't get through the blocked passage to the Clockwork City so I looked for the answer on line, found these forums and also a really great helpful group of people.

How did you become a Moderator?
I was originally approached by summer and Dreadlord in Nov '06 and asked if I was interested, my initial reaction was a "not really" as I was too involved with the Morrowind forum. Then the Black Van turned up, the rest is kind of hazy .................

As a Moderator, what do you feel is the hardest part of your job?
I don't find any of it hard, much of it is boring and repetitive such as locking topics and moving topics and posts, plus there is a fair amount of "paperwork", every time we have to deal with a member not only has the ban/warning/grumpy or explanatory PM to be done but it also has to be all logged in the admin forum in case it is needed for reference in the future.

As a Player, what is your favorite Bethesda game and why?
The one I am playing at any given time, I don't have a favourite, they are all fun and enjoyable.

What ended up making you a Bethesda fan?
Morrowind. I saw a copy of Morrowind GOTY lying in a store some time in 2004. I looked at the back, thought it looked nice and picked it up because it wasn't expensive. I had no idea what kind of game it was, it was probably my first RPG and definitely my first open world game.

What made you join the forums?
puzzle box I think it was a Morrowind modding related question.

How did you become a Moderator?
I was contacted by Bootysweat and Gstaff in January, and about a week later the Black Van showed up. On my birthday, even!

As a Moderator, what do you feel is the hardest part of your job?
At first it was pretty hard to figure out how things were done, especially all the paperwork which was more than I expected. Most of our actions have to be logged in some way. After that it was figuring out what kind of things deserved warnings, bans, or just a PM, and how to handle that kind of interaction with members.

As a Player, what is your favorite Bethesda game and why?
Morrowind. Partially due to nostalgia, but also because I still think it's the coolest world to explore in any Bethesda game. Also, mods. Tamriel Rebuilt is a fantastic project and the new release from June brought me back for yet another playthrough.

But when it comes to Bethesda as a publisher, I'm also really really excited for Dishonored. Because along with Morrowind my favourite game of all time is Deus Ex, and Dishonored is looking to provide a similar combination of first person stealth with combat and powers, in a nonlinear environment.

Question: does it bother you guys & moderator gals if you're working in the spoiler section when you're playing that game, but haven't seen/played everything?

TES2: Daggerfall was awesome.

What made you join the forums?
Wanted to ask a technical question about the game Redguard (noone could answer).

How did you become a Moderator?
The active forum admin at the time (Hayt) asked me if I wanted to be one, and I accepted.

As a Moderator, what do you feel is the hardest part of your job?
Well, I agree with what Rohugh said :P

Although it is annoying sometimes when I stumble upon a bad post by a member I know a bit, then I don't want to give him a warning and look like a "bad guy", so I have to let another moderator do it for me :P

As a Player, what is your favorite Bethesda game and why?
Daggerfall is easily the game I've spent the most time with, so I guess that will do.

Question: does it bother you guys & moderator gals if you're working in the spoiler section when you're playing that game, but haven't seen/played everything?
Yes, it does. Lately I've been rather careful to venture into the spoiler section when the game is new though. Wasn't that active here the first two weeks Skyrim was out, was busy playing the game instead :P
