Sugar: "Dangerous substance!"

Post » Tue Aug 07, 2012 5:42 am

A recent article I read provided with some interesting scientific news about sugar. According to the article, "tieteen kuvalehti": a very short online article version http://tieku.fi/ihminen/elimisto/sokeri-on-myrkyllista-kuin-huumausaine (in finnish);

- Sugar is more addicting than cocaine.
- Makes your liver "fat" in two weeks.
- Creates withdrawal symptoms.
- Makes you unnaturally hungry and thus causes you to eat more.

My first reaction to this article was ":lmao: Are you kidding me? What have the writers been smoking? Why haven't we heard of this earlier? :lmao:"

But, the article did point out that humans have only very recently started eating huge amount of sugar, due to it first being rare, then thought of as a spice, until it eventually reached the grocery status. Today, almost everything we eat and drink has sugar in it. (fruits included, but those have such a small amount that it's barely worth mentioning next to coca-cola, cakes, cookies and ice-cream.)

What's your thoughts on the subject? Do you think sugar will be labeled as "dangerous" just like cigarette's and made something like 18+ substance? Do you think the article is talking complete BS? Are you addicted to something that contains a huge amount of sugar?

Discuss :)

Yeah, i saw that article and have been mening to read it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I don't think anything will come of it, though. But that's the problem in first world countries, humans instinctually want to eat fat and sugar since they are rare in the "natural" state, in western countries they are abundant, so that leads to overweight. The good news is that humans aren't slaves to their instincts :hehe:

Indeed. Ever wondered why hamburges taste so good? Fat my friend... :D

I'm a sugar addict myself... There's hasn't been a day for about a year when I haven't either eaten candy or had a refreshing cola.

Meh, not sure what to think of that article.

I mean, I remember a time when studies would show that coffee causes cancer, but is a good antioxidant

Anything medical/nutritious on the net is bound to be complete BS.

It's on the net because tieteen kuvalehti has a website in addition to their published papers. :D

Lab rats prefered sugared water than cocaine. Sugar also made their liver fat, much like alcohol does. The rest of the things were also tested on rats, with similar results.

Of course sugar won't become labeled as a "dangerous substance". It's definitely not good for us though, and we eat way too much of it.

I don't eat too much sugar myself. I tend to eat food that doesn't have much in it, and I don't eat a lot candy or other stuff that is stuffed with sugar either.
