You never stated your own class or reasons, OP.

I personally play either a mage or archer. I'm not fond of close-quarters combat at all. Nice, safe, and far away.

Here's my rough take on equivalents:

Barbarian - Two-handed, Light Armor
Warrior - One-hand, Block, Heavy armor
Ranger - Archery, Sneak
Thief - Pickpocket, Lockpick
Assassin - Sneak, One-handed
Mage - Destruction, Alteration
Necromancer - Conjuration
Healer - Restoration
Illusionist - Illusion (duh)
Alchemist - Alchemy (double duh)
Crafter - Enchanting, Smithing
Merchant - Speech

All of my characters are multi-class, but some classes I won't do without.

Alchemist - I will not do without alchemy. Money is the lifeblood of living well in Skyrim, and this is the most efficient source of it.
Merchant - Make potions. Sell potions.
Mage (destruction) - If I'm shooting an arrow, the safest place to be is generally where I'm aiming. So all of my characters, even the one I'd have liked to be purely a barbarian, use destruction for long-range work.
Healer - Hard to survive without this one.

I tend to prefer the Crusader archetype.

A Warrior.

But not the big, bulky, heavily armored, crazy warriors.

Some light armor, a shield, a sword, and a bow. I like to pick off targets from a range at first, then engage them in hand-to-hand combat when they get close. Pretty fun, and more exciting than other classes.

Magic-based classes are meh.

I like to get up close as either a sword and shield tank or a barbarian. But I get a real thrill playing as a stealthy character, I love taking out whole gangs of things without a single one seeing me.

Archer/Warrior. I find magic to be boring in this game for some reason. I only use it to heal my follower on occasion.

I have played the entire range of characters who needed Sneak/Archery or Magic to survive, and my current class, which I think is my favorite now, is an Arcane Assassin:

Sneak for Back-Stabs.
Illusion for Fury/Paralyze.
Conjuration for Meat-Shields.
Destruction for Runes/Stun-Locks.
Alchemy+Enchanting+Speech for money.
Khajiit+Night-Vision+Darker-Nights.
=
Win.
