Mod List conflicts and issues

Post » Wed Aug 08, 2012 2:02 pm

I recently unistalled Skyrim and Steam due to the fact that I was getting crashes/freezes no matter what I did (save, load screen, fast travel, entering dwelling or cavern, bringing up the journal menu, etc.). It got to the point where I couldn't move, i couldn't get out of the location I was in I couldn't save, I couldn't do anything. My solution was delete everything and start new, like I said I reinstalled Steam and I reinstalled a fresh Skyrim. I did keep all my mods in a backup folder so that I didn't have to download them all again. I use Wrye Bash, SKSE, and BOSS. I am going to include my mod list as setup by BOSS and what I use to play my game. I am only about 6 hours into my new save, and currently had just finish becoming the thane of Whiterun, I then went to Jorravaskr to join the companions and then my havoc began again. I could not enter Jorravaskr, it froze on the load screen. I think what I am contributing to this issue could be the mod Skyrim Community uncapper, so I decided to uninstall it and then attempt to enter Jorravaskr, this worked. Once inside, I spoke with Kodlak and stole a bunch of belongings in the basemant, I then manually saved in the basemant. I thought it would be safe to then install the uncapper since I was inside Jorravaskr, I then attempted to exit jorravaskr with Vilkas, and then I started experiencing a crash the minute I activated the door. I decided to uninstall the uncapper, and even when I went to activate the door to exit it froze, and then my other attempts crashed as well. I then decided to load an earlier save that was before encountering jorravaskr, the crashes then continued, i tried to use Steam to run skyrim and again I still experienced the crashes and fast traveling did not work.

I can start over because I'm not too far into it, but I would really like to get a consistent game going so that I could actually progress with my mods.

As promised here is my current mod list, which is dialed back and doesn't include any of the Blacksmith Guild mods http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/17524, which i had all of them downloaded in my last save, I felt it was a lot of plugins and textures to deal with at first, I wanted to get a solid mod list setup and working for at least 10-20 hours and then add in these mods, then if issues were created I would know they were from the Blacksmith Guild

I also would like to note that all my saves under the save tab in Wrye Bash are Orange, I'm not sure what this mean

i was also wondering, if I needed to download all the patch files under the ACE combat mod http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10037

It might not be the uncapper, I just attempted to start a new file with this same mod list, and during the wagon ride into helgen it also crashed

Your best option is to perform a binary search. Uninstall top or bottom half. If it still crashes, take top or bottom half. Repeat. If it doesn't crash, of course you take the other half. Keep doing that until you are left with the mods that are troublesome.

are you familiar with the ACE combat mod and all the patches that it has? I've never installed any of the patches and I have about 50% of the mods that he has down as requiring patches, could this be the reason?

should I do what you suggested first before installing any of the patches?

First read the manuals to answer that question. Then, either do that or follow the manuals.

I will read the manuals, but does NMM work better at preventing conflicts or does Wrye Bash, i know NMM has the updater, but i feel like since I've swithced to wrye bash, I've been experiencing terrible issues like this, maybe I have downloaded more mods, but I don't feel like I have an excessive amount of mods that can't be handled be either NMM or Wrye Bash

NMM doesn't do a damn thing with conflicts, except report them as far as I know. Again, read the manuals. They tell you all that.

I really doubt the Community Uncapper is your problem.

My first suggestion is remove Armor of Justice until the modder is back from vacation. It has a bunch of (apparently) dirty references that break the college of winterhold quests for sure. It may have been responsible for other problems, but I don't recall the exact details.

EDIT: Wrye Bash is a necessity for having a large mod order that works (mostly) correctly. Without it, you just cover up problems (which a lot of people are probably fine with). But it seems to me that if you're going to the trouble of installing a mod, you might want it to work. ;)
