Caffeine addiction

Post » Thu Aug 09, 2012 7:54 am

How do you feel about the over consumption of caffeinated beverages and pills? I myself suffer this and wish there were professionals that take it seriously. I mean every time I stop I get chills, headaches, and am easily angered or distraught. I am wondering what you all think about this. Is it a true addiction?

I would say it is an addiction since you have a withdrawal problem when you don't use them.

Of course it is.

I personally love coffee, but I always drink decaf. I like the taste, I don't use it for anything else. :P

Yes, caffeine is addictive. There's even a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine_addiction about it.

I'm not addicted. At most I'll have a can of soda and cup of tea or two in one day, but that's not often. Despite my chronic procrastination, I manage my time well enough that I rarely needed all-nighters in college.

I was asking if you would consider it a massive problem like alcohol addiction. I went to some places and they sort of looked at me like I was trolling them. Caffeine is nice but when it controls your moods it really really svcks.

While technically a drug I wouldn't put it in the same activity as other addictive drugs or alcohol. Maybe you personally are more affected than most.

Well it won't destroy your liver, but having problems with your moods can cause you to hurt yourself or get yourself in trouble.

I also suffer from kidney disease and kidney stones so there is a dire need for me to quit. I have tried and eventually always fail at stopping caffeine. I just can't understand how some people can drink 10 redbulls and feel like they can stop at anytime.

You can get addicted to caffeine, but it's a mostly harmless addiction.

It was a problem for me since I couldn't go through the day without caffeinated soda, and the soda itself was the unhealthy part I was concerned about. Now I just take 100mg of caffeine in pill form every day, so I don't get headaches or the excess sugar from soda.

I think caffeine addiction is probably one of the easier ones to get over. I can't imagine it lasting more than a few days if you can gut it out. Or you can wean yourself off the java over a period of time.

And no, I don't think caffeine is anywhere near as destructive as alcohol. Alcohol messes with your mood, behavior, and thinking ability to such an extent that you can't even compare the two.

My advice is this. Go get some of the chocolate covered coffee bean treats, and just have one when your willpower starts to break down. Just a quick fix, but don't eat more than one or two at a time. I ate like a dozen before bed once, could not sleep at all, :( lol

The addiction is all about control. During the school year I tend to consume an unhealthy amount of caffeine. During the first two weeks of summer I stop drinking it cold turkey. The first 2 days are really tough but you just have to muscle through them. After that each day gets better and better. I don't slowly take myself off of it because that doesn't work for me. I notice quite a difference when I haven't had caffeine for a month, my blood pressure drops significantly (I have pre-hypertension).

I'd hate to see my Mum if she ever stopped drinking coffee. No exaggeration here - it's all she drinks apart from alcohol. Black, no sugar - even before bed. The thing is, it never seems to affect her, as she can have a cup of coffee pretty much whenever she likes.

thanks I will try that one...and not eat the whole bag either lol. I tried green tea and while I was preoccupied I somehow drank 18 cups of the tea...I will never do that again.

I drank so much coffee in the early 80's, and once i decided that caffeine was having to much of a negative effect on me and just cut myself off, went through some nasty withdrawal symptoms, i drink tea now they say its bad as well but has none of the effects coffee had on me and ive stopped drinking tea, and never went through withdrawals symptoms.
