Altered Beginning

Post » Thu Aug 09, 2012 11:41 pm

So there are dozens of threads about what changes or additions we the players would like to see made to Skyrim in future patches, DLC or Expantions. I for one have a huge list. But this one mod, that I stumbled across while watching videos on youtube made me cheer outloud, and bemoan the fact that I do not have a computer that is able to run Skyrim.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxyGMeovm-Q

The mod is simple, it changes the beginning of Skyrim. After Alduin attacks and you are knocked down, you pass out, and when you come to, the village is dead, and silent. And now you must find a way to cut the bindings on your hands, gather your gear and head out a free man/woman/elf/beast.

I wouldn't mind seeing this as a free DLC option. As the vanilla beginning is meant as a tutorial level, and for vetren players of Skyrim, who have sunk hundreds of hours into the game, it can be a bit mind numbing to go through the beginning for the 10th time. (At the very least, I'd like to see the option to skip all the talking @_@)

i prefer "Live another life" mod, it allow you to start as any kind of characters and different location. e.g. I start as Vigilant of Stendarr, then I will be starting my game in Hall of Vigilant. (the only bad side is some of the option can be kinda... bad, like the Necromancer option, it spawn me in that empty house in Bleachreach. when I go out i instantly kill by the automaton at level 1

+1 I love this mod, especially if you know you want to become part of one of the guilds.

I liked the tutorial, I think ES always does them well. Played through it about 10 times and I still enjoy it. It's not really that long anyway, experienced players can get through it in like 15 minutes.

Alright, that mod is pretty cool too. I could live with that one.

Honestly, if I could just skip all the talking, I could get through the beginning quicker. I just... The beginning makes no sense for any of my characters. My wood elf for example wouldn't follow either the imperial or the stormcloak solider (I forget their names).

Hadvar and Ralof. He/She might if they wanted to live. Remember they're wearing binds.

Yeah.... because having your hands tied in front of you never stopped you from using your hands, if a bit awkwardly. Plus, seriously. idk about you. but I think I would have had someone cut my bindings when I first took shealter in that one tower. You know, before going up the stairs and jumping through the roof.....just a thought. >.>;

thing is with that is that NO bandits (or vampires) attack you if you pick the "outlaw in the wilds" one.

I thought this mod was removed from Steam. I liked it because it used classes which I found to be a nice change. I needed to re-install it last week and couldn't find it.

I switched to the mod iZsoul mentioned and like it much better. My mage started in the College of Winterhold. Makes it interesting to do Saarthal at level 1! The shipwreck start is pretty cool too.

All of the people in that tower were Imperials. Why would they cut your binds when they were going to execute you 30 seconds before?

That is a cool feature.....but do soldiers automatically attack you because you are a bandit?

Choosing the Thieves' Guild beginning will result in a hilarious bug. You don't get the beginning. You end up waking up to a bunch of jarls and soldiers having a battle in the prison cell. I hope the mod's author has noticed that bug. Better go report it to him.

I'd like a spot right before you exit the tutorial cave where you can save and alter your character. This was in Oblivion due to the somewhat lengthy tutorial, and the only reason I can see it being absent in Skyrim is because of the Stormcloak/Legion decsion during the tutorial (which only affects which family you talk and receive aid from in Riverwood, and some dialouge during the Civil War).

I just did this last week and it worked fine. It transplanted my character right in the heart of the thieve's guild where I picked up my armor and headed out.

That was a nice feature to have. Doesn't really make sense from a roleplaying point of view, but saved a bunch of time and was practical.

I'm assuming my problem happened because of Levelers Tower, then. It is hilarious, at least.

Worked for me. Skyrim Nexus or possibly all the Nexus sites are having some problems right now. Links may work sometimes or may not. I'm even getting weird problems in which a mod that hasn't been removed from the site is being called removed. It sometimes claims the mod has no files yet when it clearly does.

Hopefully the problems are fixed by next week or sooner.

No they aren't. If you're talking about the first tower you run to, just did it again to see if my memory served me right that Ulfric was also unbound. I knew he was ungagged, a decidedly stupid thing to do to a man who shouted the former king apart if Imperials were in there. But not only was his gag gone, his wrists as well as Ralof's were unbound. And everyone in there with you are Stormcloak prisoners, no Imperials at all, who also are inexplicably unbound. In fact, not only is this weird as in how did it happen following Alduin landing and shouting you off your feet, but why are you the ONLY person still bound?

I say it's one of those things that belong in the other thread on oddities of the game.

Wow, I never even noticed Ulfric in there before. I always just sprint up the steps to trigger the dragon breaking the wall

I've used 'Altered Beginnings' It's a great mod which lets you chose your major and minor skills like the 'custom class' option in Oblivion. You can also choose which apparel and weapons you start with and there's an option to start with a horse straight away. I'd recommend it - made my character much more personal.

Heh, another fun thing to do is hop on Alduin's head as he busts into the tower. For just a few seconds you can be all dragon riding, "fear? What fear!" daring do dragonborn. Then reality, and if you're not quick the ground, hits, and you move on.
