PC not detecting HDD

Post » Fri Aug 10, 2012 1:31 am

I would've put this in the tech thread but it's locked, I can't see a new one and I can't be bothered to make the new one myself.

Anyway, I'm halfway through setting up my new PC I'm building, and as the tutorial I was following said, I unplugged my mechanical HDD (Western Digital Caviar Black) so that Windows would install properly on the SSD. However, I've now installed Windows, and updated my chipset drivers and stuff, but upon plugging the HDD back in it doesn't seem to be detecting it. I've checked the connections, it's on the same SATA power cable as the SSD and that's working fine, and I can't see any other problems. In the BIOS it's not showing up in the drag and drop boot order menu thing, but if I click the boot menu button it does seem to show up, but I can't seem to do anything with it. I've tried updating my SATA drivers but it says something about not having the right hardware. I don't really know enough about PCs to try anything else, anyone got any ideas?

Windows 7?

Once the OS is on the SSD, it should be as simple as powering down and reconnecting the HDD. It should then be detected on the next boot.

Is that what you did?

P.S.

Ah yes, go to (My)Computer>(right click)Manage>Disk Manager and format it there.

I assumed that had been done already.

yup

start menu -> type in diskmgmt.msc. Select the unformatted/RAW disk and format it. Assign it a drive letter as you see fit.
