Briefing cutscenes?

Post » Sat Aug 11, 2012 3:52 am

Those of you who are familliar with the good old Thief games probably know that Dishonored have a few resemblances with them. Not only stealth and the steampunk vs magic like city, but also the sandboxy mission structure and objectives.

Thief always had these nice briefing cutscenes before each mission that helped set the mood and provided some story and hints. Do you think we will see something similar in dishonored? Or, more importantly, would you like to see it in Dishonored?

Personaly I can already imagine a Garret style intro to the Lady boyle mission. Almost like the one from Life of the party :D
Here is an example for those of you not familiar with Thief: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuR4G0Oceww

I really liked what I could get to work on this blasted phone, but I have a feeling it could clash with a direct conversation with the particular loyalist relaying the outline of a mission. Then again, pictures flashing by with VO from the particular character giving you the details might be better. I'm really not sure. But with Corvo being silent, the dynamic changes already. Do you think it would be the same effect when there isn't a unifying personality giving the briefings? That might be the case already. I've only played Deadly Shadows and that a long time ago.

The exposition and mission briefing is delivered through dialogue options and some in-game scripted sequences. Not that many of them too. Also...Life of the Part!!! Best level in the history of level design!

Almost as good as Life of the Whole  I do hope we get a rooftop focused mission in Dishonored though. Or maybe thats just my Thieffanboyism speaking

Yes i realise that much of the expositions is delivered through dialouges in the HUB (much like DX1 I guess), and I really like that. But some nice (voice)overview and images of maps and people in the mission would be nice too. Those thief briefings really sets up expectations perfectly for the coming level IMO

Don't know. It might work if it was just two or three of the same people, either alone or togheter. Like a meeting or something. I don't know if its confirmed how many contacts Corvo have

I would like that too. Although:
  • It seems like it could be too linear.
  • How do you explain having to stick to the rooftops when Dishonored is so open?

Several rooftops! Also the briefing occurs when you are being driven via the boat and your "pal" (who's name I have forgotten for the third time now). Harvey mentioned that two weeks ago and I almost forgot about it. Brain no work.

The city streets are flooded with billions of rats maybe? In thief the streets where a loong way down and the fall killed you, also it was heavily patrolled. Thats why you took the roofs in the first place.
Also, as strife said, lots of roofs with dosens of buildings and estates you can enter through chimneys and windows. Thats not linear, Just like in Thief 2

Oh, just the thought of that! A tsunami of rats, flowing through the streets. That would actually be pretty interesting. I can't believe that I haven't thought about this already during the Dishonored development process, but I just thought about the last-ish scene in that movie with Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman with the assassins and the loom of fate. The scene where he flooded the building with explosive-strapped rats which blew up the building. So similar to Dishonored...

I so like that name. Don't you dare touch my rats! I like 'em. Leave 'em alone.

A rooftop mission would be great, and a nice homage.

IMO i just hope that there is a level, that contains such a great scale, with a similair attention to detail, no matter if it's on rooftops or in a sewer. If they can create a similair feel to "a life at the party" i'll give them my firstborn

They already said that they were aiming exactly for that with one of the levels. As it was mentioned before some levels are huge others are smaller but more directed and still have that freedom we see in the other missions. I am glad they took their inspirations from "Life of the Party".

Me too, Life of the party is the standard bearer for this kind of level design.
