Sheilds and Armor Rating

Post » Fri Aug 10, 2012 11:05 pm

So, I'm working on a mod, and one of the features of this mod, is the ability for Shields to actually prevent incoming damage, instead of reducing how much damage you take.(Ideally, I'd like to see blocking drain your stamina, in place of health, with the amount of damage - shield rating = stamina drain)

So how exactly does armor rating on shields, and weapon damage correlate? Is there some kind of formula for this?

Is there a way force-stagger opponents with no stamina when blocking?

Sorry.....I lol'd.

Ahem, I think that sounds like an awesome mod, actually. That's how shields should work - in real life, your health doesn't get farked when a sword clunks it, but a hard hit does take some stamina/endurance out of you. I like it.

1) Err, I don't know how armor rating and shield armor rating affect damage. You could make up a simple equation that will balance the difference. Maybe the armor rating of a shield, say (66), would take 1/3 of your stamina (33 points). Then factor in the weapon the attacker is using (say, damage 20) and add 1/3 of that into staggering? I don't even know if that makes sense. You could just ignore weapon damage and use the armor rating of shields to block whatever it is that they're getting attacked with (simpler, yet still adds to realism - hey daedric shield should be as rattled by a steel sword as an ebony one....though two handed weapons this realism gets lost a little).

2) Force stagger opponents while blocking.....hmm, without a potion of drain/damage stamina, none I've heard of.

Sorry, hope smarter people can help you! Good luck with your awesome mod!

Well the main thing is, I'm trying to stay away from SKSE (as I simply do not know how to do that kind of thing, I'm not a script monkey. never been one.) So I'm trying to work -within- the system of base skyrim.

Even with a 600 armor rating shield, you still take a lot of damage from weapons...
As for staggering, I know theres a way to tweak the value of staggering with weapons, but the ideal system i'd like to put in place, my not simply be possible within the confines of Skyrim without SKSE. (That being, if you block with a shield, and after some formula, if the damage exceeds your stamina, while yoru shields raised up, you, the blocker would be staggered. If you had enough stamina, the attackers weapon would bounce off the sheild, and they'd take a little longer to recover from the costly attack. I'd also like non-connecting hits, to stagger the attacker, but thats definately an SKSE only thing.)

So as it stands, i'm simply trying to make everything work within the systems provided by skryim atm, before trying to work with SKSE and working it that route.

And No, Shields/Armor Rating, =/= Energy = Mass multiplied by the speed of light squared.
