What to do with your money?

Post » Wed Aug 15, 2012 5:22 pm

I did earn over 1,400,000 gold legitimately and it doesn't cap at 999,999.

Yep, I had about that much when I retired my first character. I kinda expected it to "roll over" or something when I hit a million but it just kept on going up. If it can do one million, I guess it's possible to get to at least 9,999,999 as well. I wonder if anyone's gone past that and can confirm that it's possible to hit the 10 million mark without it blowing a gasket. :P

I think it would work better at the end of the Civil war, if you replaced either Ulfric as Jarl of Windhelm, or Elisif as Jarl of Solitude (as she would then become High Queen)

Wouldn't work as becoming High King/Queen just tacks an additional title onto the one a Jarl already has - he/she doesn't give up their Jarldom to take the other job. Torygg was both High King of Skyrim and Jarl of Solitude until he died; I think it's even mentioned in the game somewhere that it has become the (Imperial approved) tradition for the Jarl of Solitude to be the High King/Queen as well. If Elisif were voted in as Queen she would still be the local Jarl; same with Ulfric in Windhelm. So unfortunately there won't be an opening for the Dovahkiin in either case. Then there's the fact that the Dovahkiin would have still have to qualify for the job by virtue of race (Nord) and, presumably, lineage as well. That in itself would make it a no-go for a lot of players.

Drop all of my coin in my house and swim in it until the game crashes.

I did this with gems after the Prowler's Profit perk. So pretty, and so laggy!

With gold, I found that by hauling it around I inhibited my thieving tendencies. Why pickpocket a silver ring with 200K in your own pocket? So I stuffed the gold in a drawer and got my groove back.

I've never had over 10,000 gold at one time.

I normally buy Breezehome in Whiterun, and use the other amounts of money to buy better armor when it comes available.

Of course, I'm one of those people who don't stick to one character.

Buy hoo.... Oh, you mean in game?

Dunno. I've never amassed that much. Place it one piece at a time on a drawbridge and make it rain money?

I can't see the race thing being a problem - it's noted several times that 'being a Nord' isn't as simple as physically being a Nord, it's who you are. That's why you're able to join the Stormcloaks regardless of race, since it's repeatedly mentioned that 'If you're a true son of Skyrim, go see Ulfric in Windhelm" - so a person's beliefs and actions are far more important than lineage. Likewise, some NPCs mention you're a 'true Nord' when you perform some exceptional task for them, regardless whether you're an Orc, Imperial or Elf. In fact, being a non-Nord Jarl would open up some fascinating possibilities since times are certainly changing in Skyrim.

Pave a poor section of town road with gold?

If I did not have to drop 400,000 coins one at a time, I would do this.

What would be cool is to go to a town square, and throw a bunch of money up in the air and watch all the NPCs scramble and fight for it.......

Yes, but Skyrim is still ruled by an established aristocracy where blood matters. If it didn't matter, titles wouldn't be handed down from parent to child as a matter of course, and it's pretty obvious that they are. Personal merit may be a considerable factor in being accepted into general society as a merchant or tradesman or "hero" or member of a Jarl's court, but I'm not sure it's gonna cut the mustard when it comes to handing out the big prizes like who gets to sit on this or that throne. That's not how monarchies work, even in modern ones where the rest of the culture has moved on from that kind of rigid class structure in day to day life. You could be the most highly regarded "commoner" in all the world but you're not gonna be handed a crown unless you're born into the nobility or marry into it. Or have the wherewithal to create your own personal kingdom and declare yourself its ruler. :P

And some continually refer to me as "brother" or say other things that would indicate they think I'm a man when my characters are female. There's also one who will ask if you've ever seen one of those "cat people" (or something to that effect) when you are obviously one of them yourself. I think in most cases these odd bits of dialogue have less to do with social and cultural change and more to do with the impossibility of every NPC in the game having dialogue and coding that allows them to respond appropriately to a PC's chosen race and gender given every possible playable combination.

I see your point, but the only instances we have of that in Skyrim is before the Civil War really begins. Some holds are held by the Stormcloaks, others by the Imperials, albeit each by a Nord decended from a long line of Jarls. Once the Civil War is done, you have a different person on the throne in those holds previously occupied by the losing side. The position of Jarl in those holds must have been appointed by a different process, since they didn't inherit the hold like their predecessors did. There must have been some other, unforseen elements at play to explain why Vignar Grey-Mane can be Jarl of Whiterun, but not Eorland Grey-Mane, Kodlak Whitemane, or even Farkas for that matter.

There must have been some kind of electoral meeting where candidates put their names forward and the one with the most votes is declared the Jarl (or something like that). You can't simply assume that, had the Dragonborn put his name forth, his sheer popularity and deeds might not have earned the favour and loyalty of the hold despite little things like not actually being a Nord. Times are changing, and such an event would surely be a powerful statement that the Skyrim citizens are finally willing to change with them. It could be said that sticking too rigidly to the 'old ways' is the root cause behind the Civil War, so the indication that attitudes are changing would carry a whole lot of meaning.

And, if nothing else, it would be yet another 'event' for guards of other holds to give their 2 cents on :)

Put some in your house chest monthly and pretend it's rent, or mortgage. Buy food to support you and eat daily. Drop 99,000 of it in a cave, and then do this, might be challenging :P
