Macabre Question

Have you ever attended a funeral service in an MMO/Game for a person that died in real life?

Was playing The Matrix Online game and the guild I was with attended a service in game for an alliance they had with another guild. One of their members passed away, holding an in-game event at a church/cathedral building for him.

Curious if anyone else has done this or knows of anyone that did this.

I've heard about this kind of thing, but having never played an MMO, I have never seen one first-hand.

When I played DAOC (and I played for many years), the server I played on had a very, very strong community - even across enemy lines. When a player died in any of the 3 realms, we'd all meet in an PvP zone and hold a "ceremony". The coolest part was that no one was crappy.. even though they could have killed each other, they didn't out of respect for whomever it was we were there for.

I think I personally went to 3 or 4 of them.

No, but then I don't play MMOs. If I did play them and I considered the person a friend, then I might attend one of these online funerals.

I had a purely online friend, one I never had the pleasure of meeting in real life, and when he passed, I lit a candle for him in my own home, since I couldn't attend his funeral.

I think the emotions you feel when someone passes are the same whether you knew them IRL or not, so if you can't be there in person an online tribute is just as good.

Not going to link to the article, but there was an in-game funeral procession that happened in WoW in which everyone participating got killed by the other side.

That's the unfortunate thing that i've heard of as well. Some are quite disrespectful and refuse to let such events take place believing it to be an opportunity to gain notoriety for...being jerks shall we say. Thankfully the event I attended was respectful and both factions didn't interfere with the service. (Think there were the freed people, marovingians, and the agents. Forget the name of the freed people, but it was on their side. )

I recall reading a similar thing in another MMO but can’t remember which one; I believe it was PlanetSide. One clan was leading a funeral procession when a rival clan launched an all out air-assault on them. Very sad indeed.

Yea, I remember hearing about that as well. It seemed pretty ridiculous that people could be so heartless, yet it's just a game... I'm not too sure how to really feel about it.

I played The Realm Online for years (age 7-13, 15-16, and for a bit at 19 & 20).

I attended 2 'private' funerals for players that I had known for like 10 and 8 years respectively. Only one was 'ceremonial', but both funerals we all just talked about our in-game (or IRL) experiences with those persons.

Pretty somber stuff. I would still play but none of the people that still do are people from my old guild or groups.

When it's a tightly knit community, there's usually a huge amount of indication on whether it's true, to the point that if it isn't true, it was such an amazing and off-the-wall job of BS that I don't mind falling for it.

No, not funerals... I've attended several weddings in WoW, and was even the minister for one, but not a funeral.

We never had this on our server in DAOC. Sad.

I think it really depends on the community. We had obits, funeral stuff, and other proof from "real life" that these people had indeed passed away. If they went through all that trouble just to have someone throw them an online funeral... well, more power to them. But, with the community we had, I very seriously doubt that was the case. Especially the last one I attended which was a mother of 2 little girls who was killed in a car accident right before Christmas. I'm not saying there aren't sick people out there who would make that up, but I just serious doubt this was. (Like I said, especially with her RL friend posting her obit and such.)
