What are your morals worth?

Post » Sat Aug 18, 2012 1:28 am

So, I was watching Workaholics (the show), and there was one scene where they were discussing the minimum amount of money for which they would do a certain act (in that episode with Chris Parnell, if you've seen it you know which discussion I mean).

Anyway, it got me thinking. How much money would be the absolute minimum for you to get over your moral inhibitions over an extremely morally henious act? That is, you wouldn't do it for below that amount, but would for that amount or above. By 'morally henious act' I mean, say, murdering a stranger. What about killing your mother or some other loved one? This is just off the top of my head, if you can think of anything else please, go nuts.

Also, this is a theoretical exercise, so assume that no one would know what you did but yourself, and there would be no questions asked about the money you're to get. Basically, how much is your conscience worth?

Myself:
Spoiler
Killing a random stranger, I would say it depends on who - my absolute lowest to knowingly kill another human being for profit would be $500K. This is if it's some random hobo. Killing my mom..... if I'm honest, about five million dollars, not a penny below.

Oh, and a minimum of judgement on other people please! We all know where that leads, don't get this thread closed.

Never family. Close family, at least.

Everything else is negotiable. It also depends on the difficulty and likeliness of getting caught. If you gave me a situation, I'd ask for a price depending upon that. Much less than what you asked for, that's for sure. But if I'm guaranteed to get whatever amount I ask for, then hell, I'll ask for as much as I can.

Frankly no amount of money could cause me to perform an act such as murdering another human being (regardless of social connection) for the simple fact I couldn't live with myself afterwards.

I'm not on good terms with my family. Best not to say much more.
But still, I'm no killer. Be it a "close" (flexible term) person or a stranger, no amount of money could persuade me to take another person's life. I'm a humanist, I like living. They probably do, too. If they don't, it's still not an excuse for me to kill them.

I don't think any amount of money is worth it.

Theoretically you could justify it like this. People do activities like e.g. manufacturing cars where they know it will wind up killing someone, but the overall benefit is worth it. If I murdered a stranger and got paid ten million dollars, I could donate nine or even ten million dollars to famine relief. That would save thousands of lives. So the world would be better off.

However, I could not go through with it. The world will have to sort itself out.

I know for a fact that no amount of money and no gift in the world would be large enough to get me to knowingly kill a family member.

As for another human being that I've never met, I have no idea. It would depend on the person. If they're a bad person and deserve to die then it probably wouldn't take too much money. I don't think I could bring myself to kill someone undeserved of an early death though.

I don't think I could kill another person, no matter the amount. The only time I think it's right to kill another person would be in the case of euthanasia/assisted suicide, but in that case a doctor (or someone trained to do the job with as little pain and as much dignity as possible) should be used, not me.
Even apart from the actual act itself being an incredible burden psychologically, I'd probably end up mad from the paranoia of getting caught.
