Is taking from hidden chests stealing from RP point of view

Post » Mon Aug 20, 2012 3:54 am

Hi.

I know that there are hidden chests throughout skyrim. The one's I know about are in Dawnstar and Markath. I also know that these hidden chests belong to traders and contain their goods.

I'm trying to play a good guy so no stealing but, when you find these hidden chests, it does not come up as stealing in your journal if you take all their stuff. The chest at Dawnstar is not near any trader but the one near Markath is very close to a trader.

So, the question is, is it stealing from a roleplaying a good guy point of view to take the stuff ?

Thanks.

If it ain't in a house, and there ain't a person next to it. It's mine now.

That's the way I see it.

Well, it doesn't come up as stealing because they aren't supposed to be somewhere you get to really. For example the one in Whiterun is under the Skyforge which would make it like 20ft under solid rock. But anyways, yeah it's not being a good guy. You know it belongs to the trader, you're taking it and it doesn't belong to you. Unless you want to RP, "Oh, look at that pretty chest underground!"

I dunno, doesn't sound good guy to me.

I RP it as buried treasure and that's only in dawnstar anywhere else is ridiculous.(markarth and Whiterun for instance would require digging through solid rock)

Of course taking possessions that isn't yours is considered stealing. I doubt anyone leaves something in a chest, hoping for someone else to come take it, unless they're doing charity.

Your character nows owt about no trader. Now if some fool wizard is trying to hide his treasure with invisibility and passwall and the like, and you find it, the only decent thing to do is take it so he knows to get it right next time, and improves as a spellcaster. It's almost a public service.

How does your character know that it belongs to the Khajiit caravan?

Of course it's stealing from an RP perspective, it's the merchants chest.

There's one in solitude and whiterun aswell if you didn't know.

Millions of beings from different universes told my character the location of the hidden chests in a series of dreams.

You better have a talk with them. They conveniently left out the part of it being owned by a trader. Dirty buggers.

It could have their mark on it?

I don't think you can even see it. The one in Dawnstar is buried. The only way you know it is there is your crosshairs pass over a spot on the ground and it says, "Open Chest" (or whatever). So really you can't even "see" the chest is there.

In summary:

The chests in Markath and Dawnstar don't require moving between the geometry of the game, you can just pass yout crosshair over the spot i.e. they are buried treasure.

For RP, my character would have been given a map to the locations by some random person who promptly died.

My charcter would not know who the chests belong to although, in the case of Markath, there is a Khajit trader camp almost right next to it but they never say anything ! As opposed to any bandit camp where the bandits would promptly attack you as soon as they see you.

So, I think in these two cases, it is ok to take the stuff (because it will bug me forever knowing that they are there and not taking them).
