Question: How Private is Facebook? Will secrets be compromis

Post » Mon Aug 20, 2012 10:51 pm

Speaking online privacy, I want to know if there is anyway my forum content, I.E, posting history can be seen on facebook since I am using the same email for this account and my facebook one. Can people in facebook be aware of my forum membership? I am sort of paranoid when it comes to this and I want it to be a secret, one I cannot affort to have revealed.

Second, will anyone in facebook be aware of my search content and etc in Google.com? Again, everytime I log into youtube, my email pops up on google.com and my email linked to youtube is the same on facebook. Does this mean people can see the videos I like and comment on? Or worse . . upload?

I tried all sorts of privacy settings, but with all this intricate facebook updates, I am going paranoid in thinking something must be missing and my online "life" will be made public.

Example: Joe-Smoe is a youtube account. He liked a video dubbed "Grannie's Rump", would that informatin be public in his facebook account(named Joe Smoe) saying "Joe Smoe liked a video called "Grannie's Rump"?

You deactivate it by going to Privacy, then Account.

Facebook doesn't keep track of your browsing history, so people won't know anything about your forum activity unless you specifically mention it, and there's an option to upload videos into youtube.. the only things I ever uploaded were some videos but it's not an automatic thing.

I still have my facebook, but I'm planning to delete it probably early next year.. it just doesn't serve much of a purpose to me these days and the people I have on there I don't care too much about anymore. In terms of your concerns, you don't have anything to worry about.. but you might as well be careful just in case.

1. None of your facebook friends can see your forum posts or google searches or anything like that unless one of three things happens:

- You click the "like" button, as then it'll be broadcasted on Facebook

- You get http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clickjacking#Likejacking

- They are REALLY intent on tracking you down across the web (and even then only so much information will turn up)

That said, to address the title, which is quite different than what the OP is about: Everything you post on Facebook is effectively in the public domain, especially now that http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/16/federal-judge-facebook-profile-privacy/.

Basically when you post something on facebook:

-- First your privacy settings kick in. Let's say you're smart and restrict your profile to only be viewable by friends. It doesn't matter because:

-- your Facebook apps all have permission to all your content. Let's say you're smart and don't use any Facebook apps, it still doesn't matter because:

-- your friend's facebook apps have permissions to all your content.

Rule of thumb is: whatever you post on Facebook you should expect to eventually be seen by someone you'd rather it not be seen by, because more than likely it will. Best off not posting anything you'd rather not have anyone in particular see.

Good example of it is the http://www.bilconference.com/videos/privacy-is-dead-eric-gradman-cloudmirror/

Actually, if you're logged into Facebook, http://lifehacker.com/5843969/facebook-is-tracking-your-every-move-on-the-web-heres-how-to-stop-it. If they didn't, the Facebook "Like" button wouldn't work when you wanted to click it.

Deleted my Facebook a week ago. They forced me to use timeline. I don't like the road they're on, and their stocks have dropped by more than 50%. It's a dying trend trying to innovate itself when it didn't need to.

Was wondering how long it would take you to post. :P
