Several Questions from New Person around here

Post » Tue Aug 21, 2012 8:18 am

Well hello there,
I have been playing Skyrim on PC for several weeks now and have three characters in total, highest being 28. So my first question is am I ready for any mods or Dawnguard? If so, which one should I do first?

If mods, please refer me to a good guide to get started on it because I really have no idea how it works. Also, any essential basic mods to start with? I am not looking for anything dramatic and gamechanging yet.

I think that's all. Thanks.

Oh that's right, I still have yet to finish the main story line, although I am planning to do whole of it only on one character.

Any responses about the starting mods would be nice.

Firstly, welcome to forums! And have a http://images.uesp.net/c/c4/Fishystick.jpg!
And a http://www.briastfeedingarts.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/milk.gif!

It depends on you OP. If you're already know-how Skyrim works, or what have happened in Skyrim. And if you're getting know a bit about it's lore. I think you're ready for Dawnguard. But at least you have to finish main quests or one of guild quests.

As for mods.. Nope, I'm not recommend it yet.
You need to put more hours to Skyrim.
But you might need Unofficial Skyrim Patch though. And if your PC is a beast, then downloads some mods that will enchance your graphics.
But do not touch mods that will change gameplay, yet.

That's all my suggestions. Good luck!

The thing about mods is that there are so many to choose from... other than general graphic improvements, which are always good if your rig can handle them, it all boils down to what you want.

If you've played long enough to know that there are certain things you want to add, change, or remove, then look for mods that will do those things for you. The only one who knows when you're at that point is you. Some people can play vanilla for ages and be perfectly happy, others will find some little thing that makes them want to tear their hair out after a few hours. It's all subjective.

Mods are subjective...eye of the beholder types of creations. That said, I would recommend starting out with mods that don't have dependencies, like needing additional mods to function...just for the sake of simplicity.

I would check SkyrimNexus or Steam for popular mods, as these are probably user friendly and have a large user base to help with problems. Personally, I would say UFO (Ultimate Followers Overhaul) and Deadly Dragons are both essential and good learning mods.

Lastly, make sure that when you click your Skyrim icon, the 'Data Files' entry isn't greyed out. If it is, there is an easy fix that can be found on Google...though they may have fixed that in one of the patches.

Alright, thanks guys for your constructive responses. Think I will wait on both mods and Dawnguard. Although, I am positive that first mod I will get is SkyGUI (I think I spelled it right)

Thanks again, have a nice day.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that one. SkyUI is great mod, I shall recommend that one too myself.
And don't forget to download latest SKSE too! You'll need that for SkyUI to works.

SkyUI is awesome, possibly the first mod I got as well and now I wouldn't want to play without it.

I can also second the recommendation of UFO, if you use followers at all it's well worth checking out. Just make sure you read the install/uninstall instructions carefully and follow them to avoid any potential problems as the procedure (especially for uninstallation) is not as cut and dried as with most other mods. It will let you have multiple followers but even if you don't want more than one at a time the other things it does make it worth having, for one thing it will give you complete control over a follower's inventory, including the (sometimes crappy) default gear that you normally can't do anything about.

The only rational way to build a mod list is to decide what you want to change and then find a mod to change it. Blindly adding mods just to be adding mods is foolish.

What would you like to change about the game? What would you add? What would you subtract? Until you've answered these questions you are not ready to add mods. Once you've answered these questions you'll be in a position to begin looking for mods.
