A question's been bugging me ever since the end of Oblivion:
Why is the player so loyal to the establishment? Even in Skyrim, where you can join the rebellion and drive out the Imperials, the player still ends up loyal to the new High King.
In Oblivion, it was slightly understandable - you couldn't activate the Amulet of Kings (not being of dragon blood), and you really don't get all that much power in Oblivion (other than as guild master). Sure, you're cheered as a champion, but that's it.
In Skyrim, however, you are the Dovahkin. This is someone the Nords are already speaking reverently of when you first find out, and then, as you grow in strength, you become not only more powerful as a character, but politically as well. Not only can you lead the guilds, you can become Thane in all nine holds. Beyond that, even ignoring the strength of a Vampire Lord who can blot out the sun, you are able to summon dragons to aid you in battle?
So, what's preventing the Dovahkin from setting him/herself up as the new Emperor?
If you're playing an Imperial, you've got a better claim then Titus Mede (as the dragon blood is necessary to keep Mehrunes Dagon from destroying the world). Whether you kill him in the Dark Brotherhood or not, what's preventing you from telling Tullius that the only way you'll end the rebellion is if he'll support your claim to the throne. Convince the rest of the Imperials that you'll restore the Empire to it's former glory by crusing the Aldmeri Dominion, and you've got a good chance.
Nords/Bretons, same thing, really, only it'll be leading the Nords to their former glory crushing the Aldmers, and "revitalizing" the empire.
Altmer/Bosmer? I'm in charge. Got a problem? Talk to the dragon I can summon at will.
As for the "weaker" (politically, that is) races (Orcs, Kajhit, Argonians, Redguard) - it shouldn't take much to be able to convince them that it's their turn to be in charge.
And yet, this is never explored ingame, or even suggested. I can summon dragons, I can control dragon shouts (Unrelenting Force alone is good to take out a few ranks of soldiers), why shouldn't I be emperor? Who can really stop me?
Has anyone else ever thought like this?
