What severe weather events have you experienced?

Post » Thu Aug 30, 2012 10:01 am

Seeing Hurricane Isaac making landfall along the Gulf coast today brought this topic to my mind. Plus I am a bit of a weather freak. Hopefully everyone will be safe from this storm. Although it is only a Cat 1 it is moving slowly so a ton of rain is going to fall in several states.

Living in Virginia I have experienced two pretty decent hurricanes over the years. Isabel and Irene, both of which knocked out power for about 10 days or so. Lost a few giant trees in Irene as well. The derecho earlier this summer caused a fair amount of damage in the Mid-Atlantic as well.

Share your stories about the hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, floods, blizzards, droughts, and any other weather event you will always remember.

The worst weather event I ever witnessed was a hail which destroyed our garden and damaged the car. All bad things seem to happen in central and southern Poland - droughts, floods and occasional (and small) hurricanes. Nothing touches the coast except for local floods near rivers

I live in a flood zone and have had a few of them over the past couple of years. I even have pictures that I kept from one of them, which I will share right now.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/SubTonic17/Flood/IMAG0003.jpg. The flood water never actually reached our house, but a few more inches of rainfall and we'd have had water in the living room.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/SubTonic17/Flood/IMAG0004.jpg. Yes, somewhere under that mess is a road.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/SubTonic17/Flood/IMAG0007.jpg. The river got so high that it came up behind us as well.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/SubTonic17/Flood/IMAG0010.jpg. I believe it was taken from the bridge about a quarter mile from our house. Without seeing the water level as it normally looks, it's hard to tell just how shocking this picture is, but that's what the river looked like.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/SubTonic17/Flood/IMAG0012.jpg. Note: Not where the river usually is. It's a small park located nearby.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/SubTonic17/Flood/IMAG0017.jpg. The water level isn't as high as that last photograph implied, but the illusion of depth was enough to freak me out.

Haven't seen flooding in awhile ever since they improved the drainage around the neighborhood...
Whatever usual Texas weather.

I was outside of work until 9pm due to the buses and other useless things caused the roads home to be closed.

Hurricane Frances, Katrina, Andrew, and Isaac as a tropical storm. I have had a few tropical storms that were not named. I have seen a few tornadoes as well. Clouds declare war on Florida a lot.

I experienced the earthquake that affected Ontario, some of the US and possibly other places. I was playing MW2 and thought the shaking was because of a Stealth Bomber but then I realized it was an earthquake and I said into my mic "[censored]! an earthquake!"

I also went through something called a macro or micro burst, forget which one it was. My mother sent me to the store to pick up a few items, and it picked up immediately after I departed. The wind was so intense that I was forced into an all out sprint and I was getting carried away by the wind. There was severe lightning and I saw some lightning strike right in front of me. I totally wanted to do a dolphin dive but I feared that I'd get picked up by the wind. The local KFC had a pole with a giant KFC bucket but the storm tore that right off and sent it flying and it shattered into pieces.

I've been in quite a few [censored]storms.

Seriously though, there's not much extreme weather in Norway. I've experienced floods and hurricanes though.

Living in Oklahoma, I have been through more tornadoes than I can count on two hands. That and huge hail along with really big thunder storms.

Almost none living in California. We have heavy rains once in a while but that's about it (El Nino). Never been on the receiving end of any flooding that occurs with them.

I was under water for the summer of 2011. I got hit with hurricane Irene and tropical storm Lee, then another tropical storm, then got nailed with the freak Halloween blizzard. Was quite literally under water, 28" in my basemant and no power for a month (combined storms).

Was in the blizzard of '96. Had no school for a week.

There's actually quite a few more.

More hurricanes than I care to recount... and 10 days without power? That's cute. In 2004 we were without power for over a month. I've also seen tornadoes, minor flooding (nothing severe like the midwest), severe droughts that cause the entire state to burn, etc.

The only stuff I haven't seen/experienced is a snowstorm and earthquake. And trust me, I'm in no hurry to mark them off the list.
