Long story short: I'm looking to gain 300+ hours of community service/volunteering for college and I need some ideas on where I could do that. Have any of you had to do community service for a class before and if so, where did you do it? Or if you have any suggestions, let's hear 'em!

Food banks always seem to need extra help, and you can volunteer in some libraries too.

In my province, high schoolers have to complete 40 hours of community service. I worked at a guys farming business for the 40 hours. I got a few hours packing groceries for free for a soup kitchen. There are programs that probably have a database of where you could go in your town or something.

I was forced to do community service after I got into some trouble with the law (I was only 14) and I worked my hours off at the local church. I only had to work off 30 hours. I was around people the majority of the time which I recommend because socializing while working makes the labor more enjoyable.

So yeah, find a place you know will feel comfortable working at and make sure there are some people involved.

I'm not religious in any sense either but the preacher was a really nice person, I enjoyed his company.

I always volunteer at Feed My Starving Children.

We would have to do that also if you take Senior Social Studies. Luckily for me I took AP Euro and Pysch.

I helped my friend with his community service, we went to food banks, homeless shelters and some recycling plant.

woah 300+ hours. at the middle school i went too we were required up to 45 hours of community server each year. Which wasn't hard because they arranged options for you to pick and quite often it would be during school hours so it was a great way to get out of class.

The part that blew was that there was a form we would have to fill out for each CS event we were involved in. The form had really lame questions like "Why did you choose this community service event" or "how did this make you grow as an individual". Every single student would get into an argument with the guidance councilor who wrote the form, mostly because she would not allow us to answer the first question with "because im am being forced to". She would make us fill out the form again if she found out you had lied about how the community experience experience improved your life.

She was really trying to force this whole idea that we were learning something from something we were being forced into, when the fact is we did not want to get kicked out of what was possibly one of the coolest slacker schools ever.

You are near the Twin Cities? I've been there twice...

Anyway, as to the OP
Contact your local Chamber of Commerce or umbrella non-proffit organization to get a list of the local non-proffits. They'll be able to point you to many different locations. A back-up might be going through social services or the judicial system for service hours. The latter sends out many folks to fulfill their obligation to society and might have some contacts. Many states or local governments are also in need of labor.

Otherwise:
Schools (after school programs, supplimentary instruction, photocpies, etc.)
Churches
Food banks
Local Government (parks and rec for helping out with programs, facilities upkeep, park clean-ups, etc.)
Animal Shelter
Human Shelter

The place where I work would be unusable if it wasn't for some volunteer hours spent on maintenance. With my wife's work, many folks would go hungry if it wasn't for volunteers.

There's a couple of things that you can do that have probably been mentioned. Needed CS hours myself for a scholarship and volunteered at a local middleschool working as a teacher's aid. Worked with the special needs kids helping out and then transferred to another teacher that needed assistance. It's not particularly difficult since you get sent on errand jobs to get supplies, make stuff, or see what kids need help.

After that you can look at the local places around you that could use assistance and offer hours. As Rumbly mentioned you can try Food Banks, Animal Shelters, but you can also do that meals on wheels stuff where you ride along with a senior adviser delivering meals to the elderly.

Schools might be your best bet since unpaid teacher aids are extremely helpful and in short supply, or atleast near me they are/were.

Your local church should have volunteering opportunities. I did that for a traffic ticket I got.

I made a list of food pantries (aka churches for the most part) to visit tomorrow and I know of another charity organization here in town that is setting up to do an outreach to homeless vets in our area so I'm going to see if I can get on board with that. Honestly, I want to avoid working with kids if at all possible... it's really not my cup o' tea.

Yeah, 300 hours seems like a lot but I have 2 years to do it. I'm trying to meet a requirement to graduate with honors and volunteering can actually go towards my elective credits. (1 credit for every 20 hours of community service.)

For some reason.. I can never help in te fields and areas I want to. Too much politics involved that's interfering with ke being able to contribute to my communities. Its frustrating and a turn off.

Is there a refugee service organization nearby?
I volunteered at the International Rescue Committee before entering graduate school.
You would learn a lot about intercultural relations as you teach English language, computer skills, and job finding skills to refugees.
It was fun and I learned quite a bit while helping them to feel comfortable in their new surroundings.

I've participated in the Community Discussion here. That's a service.(with a pun) Other than that no, except I've been at an animal shelter for a little bit before.(but it was a strange situation)
