How Hollywood Reacted To 911

Post » Fri Aug 31, 2012 11:15 pm

After the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11th 2011 the Hollywood "A-List" at the time were moved to a secret location where they broadcast a message of encouragement and support. A mixture of song, poetry and reflection to lift the spirits of a nation in a very dark hour.

It was explained that they were in a secret location because they were so important to America that they could very well be the next target after the Twin Towers.

I remember watching this in the UK with very mixed emotions.

On the one hand I was touched by the show of unity and support. You wouldn't have seen as many A-Listers at the Acadamy Awards and they were making a stand (all be-it in hiding) against a terrible atrocity.

On the other hand I was stunned by the sheer audacity that they felt they had to broadcast from a hidden location because they were so important to America... they HAD to be next on the target list.

I did a little search for documentation of the event, or some youtube footage of the broadcast... but curiously it's coming up empty so far. You would think this would be easier to find... unless someone doesn't want it to be found.

What do you all think of the immediate reaction of Hollywood's elite to this atrocity?

Well, they're ententainers, and entertatiners should do what they do best. The way they got together and tried to lift the spirit of a dumbstruck nation was great.
I'm somewhat annoyed that they thought themselves important enough to be obvious targets though. That's a good bit of audacity there, and I can't imagine anyone trying to cause terror would go after Hollywood.

Wasn't the Pentagon hit soon after 9/11? That seems a much more logical choice, and I can't imagine they only targeted the Pentagon because they couldn't fin the Hollywood stars.

Wiki to America: A Tribute to Heroes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America:_A_Tribute_to_Heroes

I remember the broadcast, and liken it to a USO morale show. I could care less about how important they think they are.

Edit: I don't really remember being moved by it. By that time I was so burned out on the whole ordeal that I was taking refuge in The Food Network and ignoring most media.

I also remember hearing rumors of some stars getting paid for the gig, which raised my hackles.

Losing the Baldwin brothers would be a national tragedy.

Well, I'd say it's only natural that people should stop and give it some thought when the date draws near.
I'm not American, so I don't really feel the personal tragedy of this, but I know that the middle of each July will haunt me for the rest of my life. That period last year was a time of real depression for me, and it's something that should never be forgotten.

It's simply human nature to remember what is lost.

I remember all those cheesy, video game like commercials that were on after we got into Iraq. I also remember the footage they showed of Baghdad the night NATO attacked, the fuzzy green NV and the tracers flickering across the night sky. I feel old :(.

A lot of people in this country really do think they are that important, it's kinda sad. I don't care about celebrities beyond their roles in movies/TV/music, they aren't superior to anyone else just because they're famous.

Adam isn't related to them, so... not such a big deal.

EDIT: Honestly, since the targets were more symbols of American culture than targets chosen to hurt the US (I mean, Wall Street was right there, imagine what would have happened to the economy....), so they were probably right to think that Hollywood was a likely target for follow-up attacks.
