New winter boots?

Post » Tue Sep 04, 2012 8:15 am

Howdy,

IT's been about 15 years since I bought the old pair of pack boots, and it's time for something new. The old ones served me well!

The old ones were a great pair of LaCrosse boots rated to -50F. They we're great, kept me warm in all kinds of cold, but a bit too heavy.

I'm looking for warm boots, say -30F, that are hopefully lighter than the big old snowmobile boots. About mid-calf height, removable liners, and waterproof to the ankle.

Brands must be available in the USA.

I don't know what's out there nowdays, new materials out on the market, etc. What suggestions do you have?

Thanks, Rumbly.

Other than that, sorry I got nothing. It doesn't get nearly that cold here in Oregon unless you go up to the mountains and I don't do that.

I wear standard military combat boots in the winter and it works real well (conditions are pretty bad here too).

I wear LaCrosse for snow boots. Love them but they are cumbersome and not good for running about. For light wear I wear http://www.prospectoroutfitters.com/store/612W!LOB/Lobben+Women which are from Norway but are not good in most of the lower 48 as they are made of felt and while very warm, wet snow is a problem as it will wick into the boot. Other than that I wear my handmade muckluks that my Mother made me about 20 years ago and they are almost worn out now. Too warm for anything above -40.

http://www.sorel.com/ mades warm boots and you might be able to find something you like there. Most of them are not stylish but very warm and maybe what you are looking for. Ugg makes some but I don't care for them or how warm they are.

Good luck finding some that suit your taste and needs.

When I was in, there were various standard issue boots: jungle, full leather combat (most common), insulated combat (Danners), and Mickey Mouse (white), depending on where you were stationed.

Are you talking the traditional, single ply of leather on the hard rubber soles? Non-inulated? I do a bunch of standing on ice and in the snow as well as hard exertion; I'm leary about not being insulated.

When I did some mushing in northen MN, felts and mukluks were a viable option. Sometimes I'd wear the LaCrosse boots, do the bread bag trick around my foot (optional), then liner, then an old stuff sack with a duct taped sole on the outside. Worked great for the campsite.

Where I'm at now, slush and ice could tear them up come spring and the sap seasonl

You must have some great memories in and of those mucklucks

Thanks!
