BestFavourite Band and OverratedLeast Favourite Band

Post » Mon Sep 10, 2012 6:18 am

So, who is your favourite band of musical history?

For me it has to be Cream, I think they pioneered the sound that Led Zeppelin got a lot of the credit for, and the trio are all some the best at their instruments that exist in my opinion. My only criticisms would be that Gingers drumming is downright boring without accompiniant and that his drum solo on Toad is too long.
That said Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd are up there and are my top depending on my mood.

My least favourite band (excluding the ones I have absolutely no respect for and who I don't believe deserve to be called a band (One Direction, Nickleback) would have to be the Doors, I don't mind their music on an instrumental level, but Jim Morrison is a terrible lyricist. This wouldn't neccesarilly be a bad thing (I'm Glad by Cream is embarassing for everyone involved lyrically) but judgiing from his awful poetry and awkward live performance he really thought he was writing Bob Dylan or Shakespeare or something. I don't think they deserve the fame, popularity and iconic status they have when better bands from the era like Grateful Dead and the Yardbirds are largely absent from popular culture.

I don't think I can actually pick a band ;) I'm never good at picking a favourite as there are so many good ones.

Me neither. I can't decide, and I have many bands that I like (and dislike). But I'm kind of interested to see what others might say.

My favorite band?

Guns N' Roses. People hate on them so much because Axl is a [censored], but get rid of his bad personality and he has pretty good vocals (especially for back in the 80's-90's). The band of course gave Slash his fame, and led him on to do more wonders like Velvet Revolver and more recent work of Apocalyptic Love, my favorite new song by them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SZrJLMTO-8. I respect Guns N' Roses for all the good they have done, introducing me to Classic Rock (Welcome to the Jungle got me hooked). So yes, my favorite band is Guns N' Roses, let the hating begin.

Most overrated/least favorite?

Besides for most new things (which shouldn't be classified as music) I think AC/DC is overrated. In my opinion they're not a great band, they have a few songs I like, but it gets annoying when that's the only classic rock band people actually know names of songs to. I also get very tired of hearing Metallica on the radio. They have decent music, yes, but this is another overrated band in my opinion. All of my 5 stations I listen to when I'm driving, 65% chance is a Metallica song is playing.

I can't take Metallica seriously, especially the song one, when he sings that taken my arms taken my blah bit he sounds kind of like Jack Black.
I think AC/DC aside from Back in Black went downhill a lot after Bon Scott passed away. The new guy is all of the annoying bits of Bons voice.

Ok this is a hard one. Just off the top of my head.

I cant narrow it down to one, so heres a small list of my favourite bands.
Now this is all just subjective mind you, so if you get offended by my criticism, dont take it to heart.

The Scorpions - These guys i think are grossly underrated. Their best music is far superior then Rock you like a hurricane and No one like you (the only songs they play on the radio though sometimes ive heard them play the zoo).
The singer Klaus Maine is a god as far a singers go. Hes up there with Rob Halford and Dio for vocalists. The guitarwork in lots of songs is fantastic as well, and to me these guys fit the bill of "pure metal" or "six, drugs n rock n roll!"

Judas Priest - Is there much to say about these guys? Rob halford is easily a legend among singers. Also tipton and downings dual lead guitars are just mind blowing, and overall judas priest are amazing song writers.

Grand Funk Railroad - These guys are also very underrated. The only songs you ever hear are the locomotion, we're an american band and somekind of wonderful. In reality these guys have some amazing work done on all their albums and are great song writers.

Megadeth - The Riffs in this band are just unstoppable. Dave really gives this band amazing energy and hes an amazing songwriter, some songs i just sit back and think "how did you write this?!!". All in all Megadeth is actually my number 1 favourite band, haha. Now daves vocals arent the greatest, but he makes up for it by playing guitar as well (and not only that but hes better guitarist then most of his lead guitarists were. The only guitarists he has had that i think were better then him were chris poland, marty friedmen and possibly chris broderick.

Now heres this list of bands i think are overrated.

The Beatles - These guys i think are horribly overrated. Almost all of their songs annoy me, and they only have a very small amount of decent songs. John lennon's lyrics in lots of songs are just so damn Naive that you want to smack somebody. George harrison was the only member of the beatles i actually liked.
The worst argument for the beatles i hear is "there wouldnt be music you listen to nowadays without the beatles!' well i call BS. I listen to old school metal and classic rock, The bands (and genre) i listen to are actually heavily influenced by johnny cash, elvis and robert johnson, NOT the beatles. I agree there are lots of bands nowadays that were heaviliy influenced by the beatles, but it doesnt mean they are 'good'.

The Doors - Pretty much the same reasons as the OP. Jim morrison is a terrible lyric writer, a terrible showman and not a very good singer to begin with.

Jimi Hendrix - Now hendrix isnt bad, mind you. But he is Overrated. He wrote very little stuff, and his most famous song (and overplayed) is all along the watchtower, the song wasnt even written by him its a cover of bob dylan. Also hes not even close to best guitarists ever, though again ill say that he isnt bad either.

Nirvana - Kurt kobain is a highly overrated guitarist. I mean what complicated riffs or solos has he ever played? Now theres some all right nirvana songs, but in the end i think they are overrated.

Metallica - Again these guys are very overrated in my opinion. They are technically the biggest band in the world, and to me thats too much recognition for these guys. Their best albums were their first 4 albums. And they owe half of their first album to Dave mustaine (go look at the album booklet, and you'll see dave wrote half the songs on that album)
Same with ride the lightning. The song ride the lightning and call of ctulu are again Dave mustaine's songs (dont believe me? go look at the ride the lightning album)
All in all, all their best stuff was written by dave mustaine, and they continued on that success.
Again this is all my opinion.

AC DC - Grossly overrated. Every song is literally only 4 chords. Simplest music ever written basically. Now these guys arent completely terrible, but they definitely dont deserve the recognition they get.

Guns N' Roses - Axl Rose is a terrible singer (at least if you svck at singing, play an instrument at the same time then) and Slash is a hugely overrated guitarist. Seriously if i spent some time with some comparisons i can prove that slash is hugely overrated. (dont feel like doing it right now). I hate Axl's Owowowow that he has to do at the end of every verse (especially with newer guns n roses) And most of these guys songs are just lame.

Motely Crue - Tommy lee is terribly overrated. I mean hes not a bad drummer, but hes definitely not a god for drumming either. Now these guys again arent completely terrible, but they arent good either.

ZZ Top - Hugely overrated. About 90% of their songs all have the same "blues riff" in it. You know the famous one that george thorogood uses all the time as well. The classic do dodo dodo dodo dodo dododoo. Same with the solos, take the solo of sharp dressed man and the solo of gimme all your lovin and they are almost identical. Now zz top does have some OK songs, but they overplay the exact same guitar riff in almost every single song.

George Thorogood - Pretty much the same reason as why i think ZZ top are overrated. For some reason some people think that blues only has 1 guitar riff. Well guess what blues and jazz are some of the most diverse music styles out there and should never be repeating the same riffs over again.

CCR - Not only is fogerty's singing terrible and identical for every song, but so are the instruments. Seriously when any ccr song comes on, it takes to the chorus to realize what song it is cus they all have the same beats going on in the background. You can seriously interchange the instruments from any given ccr song and throw it in another song and not even know the difference.
I know its blasphemy saying CCR is overrated, but thats just my opinion.

I think The Beatles are overrated.
I think that no-one could ever actually live up to the Beatles mythos even if they were the best in the world. I also think that Paul and Georges solo careers were far better than anything the Beatles did (other than Hey Jude, Let it be and Here comes the sun I wasn't to impressed by their efforts, Sgt. Peppers starts off good and ends well giving the impression of a brilliant album when it was only a good one)

Another great band is Queen, sure they're camp, but Freddie has the vocals to sell it and is probably the best vocalist (at his peak) in rock.

Another overrated band in my book is the velvet underground, other than Sweet Jane none of their songs are that good.

Favorite band? Right now, I can't get enough of Chevelle.

Most overrated band? I'm going to agree with what others have said about the Beatles and Nirvana. But I still like these bands, I don't get bent out of shape when they come up on the radio or in shuffle.

Least favorite band? The only thing that comes to mind right now is RATM. I'm probably going to get a lot of flak for that though :ermm:

Say WHAAAAT? :D
While I'm by no means their fangirl and I agree that they're somewhat overrated (especially all the recent wows about Death Magnetic are imo unjustified... and the band members themselves seem to be well past their "best before" date), looking at their career as a whole, they've made some solid good (at times great) music, and "One" in particular is among their best and most moving songs of all time.

Nirvana - Kurt kobain is a highly overrated guitarist. I mean what complicated riffs or solos has he ever played? Now theres some all right nirvana songs, but in the end i think they are overrated.
More or less agreed here, although not with the argument of "complicated riffs or solos". Some of the greatest things are incredibly SIMPLE. Look at Black Sabbath.

Apart from that, to the overrated list I would add certain bands that got big some time over the last decade, like Arctic Monkeys or Airbourne. To be sure, I think they play good stuff, but nothing too original and the latter is basically and AC/DC ripoff.

From the favourite bands: like others, I have a hard time choosing, so I'll limit myself to two of them.
Favourite of all time is Alice in Chains.
Recent favourite that I've been listening to quite a lot would be Gojira.

I don't mind Nirvanas songs, but Kurt has pretty much the same problems as Jim Morrison. His lyrics are more often than nonsense inane or nonsensical and he gets heralded as a tortured poet. He did have a hard life from what I've read, but that doesn't automatically make his lyrics good.

The three songs you mentioned along with "Help" are the only ones by them I actually like. And I also agree that they did far better solo than combined. Bob Dylan and John Lennon at least, I think Paul is still overrated.

It's probably more my problem with their kind of metal. Those "chugga chugga" rhythm guitar riffs and noises sound really corny to me and their vocals are also over the top when compared to Sabbath or even Judas Priest.

I didn't really like most of Johns solo stuff. Strange guy that John. Imagine, while not a bad song, has been played into the ground and is massively overrated. Paul was also a far better live performer during his wings period. I think he could've done with a bit more of a message to his songs though, wheras John could've have done with less.

If I undestand correctly what you mean by "chugga chugga", it's characteristic of their early stuff, basically what came before the Black Album. Personally, I find that both the "before" and "after" have their own charm, with the latter being more refined and the former more of a raw thing - maybe that's where the "cornyness" impressio comes from. Regarding vocals, James sings at times over the top, but it so happens that his vocals are perfectly fitted to the type of music Metallica play. Imo his voice is one of the best and most characteristic voices in metal, although it wouldn't fit into every kind of music. See how he managed to ruin this for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_cZ60v9YdM My ears and heart are bleeding when I listen to this.

Edit: the thing that is (at times) annoying about his voice - I'm not sure if it's the right word to describe it, but he tends to "drag" his notes unnecessarily as he sings. Sometimes it's for the good, sometimes not so much....

I don't know if it is just me, but it seems like Hetfield adds a lot of -"uh's" to his lyrics, as an extra syllable or something.

Like he'll say "the day that never comessssuh!"

But that doesn't bother me. I think Metallica deserves a lot of the praise they get (and maybe some of the criticism too :P).

My favorites are Van Halen, Boston, The Eagles, and Lynard Skynard.
Most overrated is the Beatles. I just don't see the appeal in them, and I guess they were kinda like the One Direction of the 60s (alright, that might be taking it a little too far, the Beatles aren't that bad)

Top 4 bands for me:
1) The Beatles. The absolute best band of all time. Their skills as songwriters are simply unmatched, and they essentially invented the rock album with Sgt. Pepper's. I'm not a huge fan of their older stuff (although there are some gems) so for me their career really starts with Rubber Soul and keeps on trucking from there. To be honest, anyone who says that The Beatles are overrated probably haven't listened to Sgt. Pepper's all the way through, or is just stubborn. :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiDmHKvGe4s

2) Deerhoof. In my opinion they're the best modern band because their songwriting is top-notch, and no one can play like they they do. Their drummer is my favorite of all time, their guitarists play like they are the same person on one giant guitar, and their singer is probably the cutest person alive. Their sense of time and groove is paramount and no on else has the balls to write noise-pop songs as well as these guys. Or noise-pop songs at all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7etn2czISU

3) Weezer. I won't lie, I freakin' love these guys. When I first heard the Blue Album (their first), I felt like someone understood me, and I had no idea why. Rivers Cuomo just struck a chord with me in his songs that no one else had before--a sort of melancholy that I didn't really want to admit was even a part of me, but was a guilty pleasure of sorts. In any case, his songwriting is both incredible and accessible, which is super cool to me. Also, Pinkerton (their second album) is one of the best albums of all time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65p6grAGYIM

4) The Fall of Troy. Yes, I like some post-hardcoe music. However, these guys are the absolute masters of the genre, and pack so much friggin rage and frustration and odd time signatures and dissonance into their songs that it all fits together in a really cool way. Plus their guitarist is a virtuoso and their drummer is the man. It's also a little bit nostalgic for me, so I guess there's an element of personal taste at play here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqvh_XHFrqw&feature=related

I don't really dislike a whole lot of music, and I don't really like genre bashing, but I guess I don't really like nu-rock or popular country.

That's what I meant by the "dragging" :P thanks for expressing it in a more comprehensible way. An yeah, this singing style works for their own music and it only bothers me when he tries to apply it to something completely different.

Haha, okay. I didn't realize that was what dragging meant. But I'm with you, Metallica is a great band. But just like any other band, once they go mainstream the "true" fans will start hating and claiming they sold out or whatever.

Favorite, Pink Floyd.

Most overrated, The Rolling Stones and U2.

Most disliked, hard to say. Madonna comes to mind among credible performers. I say credible because I don't think certain acts (like 'boy bands') rise to a level even worthy of consideration or dislike. :-P

Guns N' Roses.

I find bands like Guns N' Roses and AC/DC to be cheesy. I don't know what it is about them.

My favourite band would have to be The Velvet Underground, followed by The Smiths.

Most overrated band: Oasis.

As for bands I don't like so much... I haven't even bothered to check out what they are called.
