What is My Class?

Post » Mon Sep 10, 2012 10:01 pm

Hello all. I have an interesting delema, and the cure is quite subjective. You see, I have a level 79 character with nearly maxed out "everything", obviously, but I don't know WHAT he is. Now, before everybody jumps on me, I KNOW that there are no character classes in Skyrim. But players give names to there Dovahkiins as well as profession titles to make them stand out from there friends. Well, my guy started off with a Battle Mage concept, but he sorta evolved from there. I'd like to be able to give him a defining class title that fits him, but I can't seem to find something that makes sense. So, because this is such a subjective query, I thought I'd take it to the board and see if I can find some perspective. You guys tell ME what I'm playing. I believe that even with 100 in everything, it's your character's perk allocation that defines who and what he is. So I'm not gonna include skill values as thats a bit reduntant at level 79. I'm going to include basic attributes and a perk list. You guys look over it and lemme know what you think. I'll simplify when I can so as not to write a whole book here, so if I have every perk in a certain perk tree, I'll just write "Maxed" in paranthesis. Or use paranthesis to group similar perks together, such as the Novice/Adept/Master rank perks in the magic schools.

As far as play style goes, he is EXTREMELY versatile. I have been able to clear a whole room with just a dagger and a muffle spell. Or, snipe everyone from a distance. Or take a group of bandits in melee. My guy is, at this level, good in almost any situation. This playstyle was very hard in early levels, but it has paid off. He's great at One Handed, but notice he did not specialize in any PARTICULAR one handed weapon. He uses a mace just as effectively as a sword, or a war axe. You may call him a battle mage due to having extreme talent in Destruction, but notice that his magicka score is relatively low, so without enchanted gear, he's not going to outcast a pure mage. He has skills at remaining unseen and getting sneak attacks. As far as his use of the bow, he can pull that bow back as far as possible for max damage, but he's not a rapid fire ranger. He sorta specialized in precision shots, if you noticed, and for maximum damage per shot. My investment in Restoration was for the Recovery perks, so my guy is talented and regenerates Magicka at an accelerated rate to make up for his relatively low magicka pool. For illusion, he took those two perks to master the "Muffle" spell, so as to maximize his stealth capabilities. But no more than that. Blocking is tricky, too. Notice that while I have all five in shield wall, I didn't invest in SHIELD specific perks. So Xeran may be a great deflecter of blows, but it doesn't mean he packs a shield. He often just blocks with his weapon.

The only things that I know definitively about my character are these. One, he is a master at wearing light armor effectively. Two, while his Magicka is low compared to a pure mage (He only has 350), he has incredible talent in the Detsruction school of magic. He utilizes a bow, but his specialty with it is power shots (Overdraw x5), supreme accuracy (the steady hand perks), and precision (Eagle Eye). He is very good in melee combat with One Handed weapons, but does not specialize with a specific One Handed weapon. Also, Xeran is a MASTER CRAFTSMAN. With all of the Smithing Perks and all of the base Enchantment perks relating to boosting the power levels of enchantments, he can create items that are well stronger than even the in game artifacts.

So, because of his versatility, I'm having a hard time identifying with my own character in terms of Role Playing. I understand that it's largely subjective, but I'd like to hear about what you guys think. If you had to define my character and give him a class name...

What would it be?

I think I would classify him something between a Battlemage and a Nightblade.

If you have a character that is very much over level 48, then I doubt one could classify him as being any particular class. Seeing as the only way to get that high of a level is to grind out skills that are out of class for a given character. Threads like this are hard to relate to, as others cannot tell if this is a illegitimate question or just a "Hey! Look what I did" thread.

Actually ther ARE classes in Skyrim. You are just not starting out with the game placing the label on you. Ones character is defined by what he/she does.

By doing everything, you forfeit any class, to start with. I guess one could label it as a Jack O trades, but to me, that is not being a defined specialized class.

I meant that there are no "classes" in the sense that like in Oblivion and Morrowind they affect your skill progression. Your misinterpreting me a little bit, lol. Also, notice when I said that the class would be based on his perk allocation and NOT his skill values. That was my way of saying ignore that I grinded A LOT, lol. Even with 100 in, oh say Two Handed, he still svcks at it compared to another character with half that but perks in it. I grinded cuz I got to a point where I HAD to or I couldn't gain anymore levels. All the skills I used casually finally maxed and, well, I still wanted to gain perks and thats how you gotta do it :( system is a bit flawed that way

I actually like the perk system. I see no flaw except it being a tree layout. I feel that player should be able to spend the perk on what they want, provided they meet the skill requirement. Of course one should still need to take the first of a progressive level (branch) of a perk.

It's a case of TL/DR. When I see the Q of "What's the class of my level 80 character." I see no need to continue. Perks or not. I guess I set apart the class of a character by the Skills. The Perks are just an added bonus.

I'm sorry. I added absolutely nothing towards answering your question.
