My roommate is recently getting into gaming. Hes never really been one to like games, but after getting him hooked on my 360, he wants more.

I recommend he get a ps2 and a bunch of games for it, not to mention ridiculously cheap right now, but also being able to play some of the best games ever made.

His concern is that its essentially a dead platform, and since the ps3 isn't backwards compatible, that it would be a waste.

I'm still trying to convince him, what with the great games that you can find dirt cheap for the ps2. They're rather easy to find, gamestop still carries a ton of ps2 games and I don't need to tell you how useful the internet is.


I never really buy a system until it has a good library of games, usually not until midway through its life. This is the reason I haven't gotten a Vita or 3DS yet.

Its also why I'm planning on getting a wii soon, its rather cheap and I can play all the good games now and not have to wait months (sometimes years with the wii) between good games.

Yes.

Every new generation proves that getting a console two years after launch is a bad idea. It's when they're at their most expensive, when their libraries are least impressive, and most of all, when their materials are so shoddy that the damn machines are most likely to break down.

Early adoption isn't always best, I'd agree that when it comes to consoles, that's probably true.

Funnily enough I think the only console I've bought on release and not really regretted was the PS2.

Oh god, don't remind me.

It took M$ so long to fix the RROD issues that I went through 4 360s. One at launch, another after that broke, then an elite, than finally a slim since they're so much quieter.

Two years isn't bad to get it I'd say, by then they usually have some pretty good games. Maybe one year after is a bad idea, depends on the system.

My view as well, same with most appliances in general. I'm not that into console gaming anyway so I prefer to be able to get bargain bin PS2 games that give the same enjoyment as a state of the art PS3 game. Still don't own a PS3. might get one when the next gen comes out.

Hopefully Sony won't make the same mistake and the Orbis/PS4 will be backwards compatible with ps3 games.
Nintendo has always been good about this.

Sounds like a good idea to me. If he's just getting into it then he can try out loads of games for relatively little cash, and then upgrade if/when he wants to.
