Stone piles

Post » Fri Sep 14, 2012 11:58 am

I will post an image as soon as I can, I have been trying to search for the answer but am having no luck. I posted the pic on fb and twitter and no answer yet.

I am trying to find out if the little stone piles around Skyrim have a meaning like the shadowmarks.

They are called cairns, and are usually used to mark a trail.

^This. Often it's a safe path up or over the mountains, or marks the spot where the path to some place of interest meets the main road.

Surprised they are called cairns, as I've usually heard that in reference to a burial.

The word just indicates a stack of stones that is man-made and didn't occur naturally. They've been used for many purposes over the years but trail-marking is probably the most common modern usage.
