Ultrabook vs Netbook+Tablet

Post » Fri Sep 14, 2012 4:38 pm

I've decided to forsake the realm of PC gaming (and "hardcoe" gaming mostly, pokemon keeps my attention far longer than skyrim and it's ilk) and decided to go down a less powerful, but a more casual route.

I'm planning on enlisting in the Airforce when I turn 18 (about a year from now, enough time to get myself in shape and make sure I'm healthy enough) and I would like something portable.

Mostly what I do know surfing youtube and other staples of the internet (cracked, reddit, ign, etc) and a tablet would be great for sitting on the couch and doing just that.

I'd just use the netbook for transferring music to my Ipod Classic; One of the best investments I've made, that thing has lasted forever and I still have more than enough space than I know what to do with. I admit that itunes+ipod is the best thing Apple has ever done for the world. Also use it to write documents (If I ever need to) and other things that the tablet couldn't do.

However, and alternative (but more expensive) path is to go with a new Ultrabook. Remember, I won't be gaming so portability and battery life goes a long way. It could do everything I need and compared to other laptops its great, but its still clunky when all I want to do is watch youtube or browse some webpages easily.

Here is what I would get from either side of the debate;
Netbook: http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-Pavilion/B1F62AV?HP-Pavilion-dm1z-4200-Entertainment-Notebook-PC
Tablet: https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_7_16gb

Let me hear your opinions.

Just get an e-reader and read some literature.

- Don't get an Ultrabook

- Don't get a netbook

- If you need something relatively portable but capable of syncing with your iPod, I'd suggest a small-form-factor desktop. Very easy to take with you on a move while offering some of the conveniences of a desktop. It's just silly to get a netbook AND a tablet. If you are absolutely set in your ways, though, then get a regular craptop.

- Bleh, doesn't look like the iPod Classic is compatible with Rockbox.

Whats the point of getting a desktop if I'm only ever going to use it for simple things? Plus, I'm going to be moving a lot in the coming years and having to ship a monitor around would be a pain the ass.

I know the PC mentality can be hostile to anything that doesn't have the best power:price ratio, but when portability needs to be a factor and you don't need that much capability, a netbook is a pretty good idea.

I'd get the Tablet because it doesn't have dedicated apps, long battery life, and its not nearly as clunky and uncomfortable as sitting on the couch trying to surf the web.
I may still need to write up documents or do something that the tablet can't, but that doesn't mean I need to have a big bulky desktop.
I'd still have my 360 if I want to game, so I don't need an expensive desktop for that.

PC elitists being unreasonable is one of the main reasons I'm forsaking the clique; Look at any video about apple, all you have are attacks and hostility from PC people.
