A Skyrim Newbie

Post » Sun Sep 16, 2012 7:10 pm

Yep. I just got Skyrim today. I've played Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion. I want to ask..No spoilers please, what is new in Skyrim? I've been playing for a few hours and love it. I know about the dragon shouts, etc. I've noticed sometimes my character will make an epic move, time seemingly slowing down, and bash my foes into the ground.

The characters look great. Archery is a blast, as is using the larger axes. I noticed I can still poison my weapons.

Do weapons have to be repaired from time to time? I know about smithing, but I wasn't sure if that included it.

Also...factions. Once again, no spoilers if you can. I know the Dark brotherhood returns, but what about guilds? Freelance workers? (I ran into those strange hunters earlier.)

Also...one of those soldiers just walked up to me. "I used to be an adventurer like you. Then I took an arrow to the knee." I just started, and I'm already hit by the meme. XD

I haven't been on this forum for some time. Glad to be back. :3

Weapons do not have to be repaired anymore. All smithing is for is creating new weapons and armor, and improving their quality (i.e. increasing their damage or armor rating). Magic weapons still have to be recharged with soul gems though, same as in Oblivion. That is the only way to recharge in Skyrim too, the mages guild members who would do it for a fee are not present in Skyrim.

The College of Winterhold is the local magic guild, and has its questline. The Companions are the equivalent of the Fighters Guild, and are based in Whiterun. The Thieves Guild is still around in Riften. There is a Bard faction with a very small questline in Solitude. Finally you have the option of joining either the Legion or the Stormcloaks to fight the civil war, if that toots your horn.

You can also get radiant quests from the stewards of each hold. Typically it is a go here and kill the bandits. Although sometimes it is kill a giant or something else. This lets you play a bounty hunter type characters traveling around and whacking bad guys for the law.

Something else new is that now you can use melee weapons and archery on horseback. Not magic though.

The big holds all have a court wizard in the Jarl's hall whom you can buy spells from, and other odds and ends like soul gems too.

Weapons don't need repairing anymore. Smithing is completely revamped, you can now make your own weapons and armor but they won't degrade overtime. Thieves guild and mages guild are there, and there's a sort of warriors guild as well.

What's new you ask? Way better if you find it out yourself, get the hell out of the forum and just have fun :P

anyway magic is now weilded, and is no longer just some background power. the nords are a lot more fun to be around than imperials, high elves are no longer the nice little santas helpers, theyre actually [censored]s now and they also have green faces. you can get married and build your own house as well ass adopt children.

The OP asked for no spoilers,
Spoiler
neither the DB and the Thieves guild have anything to do with the old guilds, I didn't mention that on purpose.

I too approve of the new and improved green-faced [censored] High Elves.

You might find yourself capable of munching on those fiends at some point.

"She" XD I don't think I have any expansions. Just the basic game.

Thank you dAb for hiding your spoiler, I don't mind the little revelation though, that's not something super huge game ruining for me. xD

Dungeons are much better in Skyrim, probably my favorite improvement to the game. My only advice is to explore, explore and explore. There's just so much to find, I know I was amazed my 1st time traveling through Skyrim seeing all the different areas.
