Help looking for Colleges

Post » Wed Sep 19, 2012 5:23 am

I am looking into Online schools and I got a call from Everest, I want to go into game design, it seems Computer Sciences would be the closest I can get at Everest. So has anyone heard anything about this course or Everest University in general? I am wondering if it would be a good choice of schooling. Would Computer Sciences help me get into game design? If not what is a good online school for game design? I would like to be either a level designer, a world artist, or possibly even a character artist. I love to work with 3d design programs and create anything so I believe these 3 would be the best choice for me. I have considered programming but for some reason I just can't fully grasp it. I can do some basic stuff in Python but that is about it. It seems to have quite a steep learning curve.

Graphic Design would probably be better for you than Computer Science if that's the sort of areas you're looking at. Computer science would be more like if you wanted to go into writing/tweaking the game engine itself or other tweaks to the game code.

I'm doing a degree in Computer Science. It's very mathematics based, programming, that kind of thing. You won't really do anything "design" based (like creating meshes or designing levels or anything), and as you don't seem to be a fan of programming I'm not too sure if it would be suitable for you.

I did computer science in web design at Everest. I think all computer science degrees will have some programming even if it is not the focus of it.

I would say you should focus on 3D work. I had a friend who taught himself and ended up at Weta, though I think he writes tools now rather than designing Hobbit feet.

Ok, so computer sciences would not be the right choice. Graphic design would be good. Are there any school that offer graphic design specifically for gaming or doesn't it matter?

It appears Art Institute of Pitsburgh online offers "Game Art & Design(Bachelor's), 3D Modeling for Games(Certificate), & Character animation for games(Certificate)"

The certificates seem to be more for people who are already in the game design feild and are looking to better themselves.

The most important thing is your portfolio, not that you got a certificate, probably. If you spent three hours a day for a year working yourself with a top-end 3D graphics program that is widely used in the industry? I would go looking round the web for what developers say about this question, I am sure there are a million interviews, maybe in http://www.edge-online.com/get-into-games/. Or email some HR departments at dev houses and see what they are looking for. Maybe a drawing class would also be a good idea.

Beth's actually pretty good about this thing. Try giving them an email some time and ask what they look for when it comes to graphic/level designers.
