Why do enemies call you "hero?"

Post » Fri Sep 21, 2012 1:55 am

Ya I wuz watchin' dis AlChestBreach http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ommnTIgR0go and uhhh... (watching the vid not neccesary or relevant to thread, just linked it for those that are naturally curious)

I have Fallout 3 in German, and I don't think they call you a hero in the translated version. But in the english version, apparently raiders call you a hero for....for Iunno, wandering the wastes.
Likewise, sometimes bandits in Skyrim will do the same.

Am I the only one who finds this specific line incredibly awkward? By calling you a hero, the bandits are basically acknowledging that they themselves consider themselves to be incredibly friggin' evil, and they consider you a hero for....well, for wandering around aimlessly or because you just so happen to walk into their hideout. There is of course the context of "don't be a hero!" which is more like "don't be an idiot and do something heroically suicidal," but I really don't get that impression from the way they say it.

Iunno, for me it's just a very small line that's actually very good at being quite immersion-breaking. I thought this was an "experiment" line with Skyrim, hadn't realized FO3 did it too.
Am I the only one bothered by it?

Inb4 "omg people will complain about EVERYTHING," yes I know it's small but it's very effective at shattering immersion. Hence why I bring it up, cause it's a simple change that would make a decent sized difference.

I wasn't called a hero, but every time they say "You pick a bad time to get lost, friend!", or "I'll kill you if I have to!"... It warms my heart a little, knowing that maybe they aren't so bad on a good day...

Sometimes bandits talk to themselves, one complained about a lady he killed as she fought him then he tried to rob her.
But never heard the hero,

Sarcasm. It's the lowest form of wit.

I've never heard it, although I have heard a bandit singing to himself about killing someone when they're sleeping. That was fun.

What am I missing?

"You picked a bad time to get lost, friend."
"Just die already so I can take your stuff!"
"It'll be so much easier to rob you when you're dead!"
"Can't wait to count out your coin!"
"Gonna slit your belly like an old woman's purse!"
"Ha, I think you're bleeding!"
"Never should have come here!"
"Son of a..."
"I'm gonna wear that tail as a belt!" (If player is an Argonian)
"Tell you what. You start running so I can stab you in the back."
"I'm going to gut you like a horker!" (only by bandits in Eastmarch /Winterhold)
"Die, damn you!"
"Die, Orc filth!" (If player is Orc)
"I'm warning you, back off!"
"You remind me of my cousin's cat, killed that one too!" (If player is a Khajiit)
"I'll mount your head on my wall!"
"I'll have your head!"
"That all you've got?"
"Prepare to die!"
"You won't leave here alive!"
"You'll make a fine rug, cat!" (If player is a Khajiit)
"You should have stayed in your precious forests, elf!" (If player is a Bosmer)
"Hurry up and die already, so I can take your stuff!" (Might have something to do with the effectiveness of the armour the player is wearing.)
"Maybe I was just hearing things." (If Dragonborn is in sneak mode and hidden)
"Why don't you just turn around, so I can stab you in the back!"
"Skyrim belongs to the Nords!" (if player is not a Nord but the bandit is.)
"You call yourself a Nord?" (if the player is a Nord)
One I know is missing..."You think you can take me?"

"Go to the college, Da said... use your smarts, he said. Huh, like I'm supposed to figure out which college he meant!"
"Mead, mead, mead... kill 'em to get some beer every now and then? Stupid bees and their stupid honey..."
"I'll never do another stinking span in that jail... rather die than give myself up again..."
"(Sighing) Need me some Skooma... the imported stuff... just one last time..."
"Kill 'em if he talks to me again like that... get him when he's sleeping... or poison his meat... see how he likes that."
"...retire some day...get myself an island..."
"..told him to just hand over the gold, but did he listen? Oh, no... they always have to fight back..."

Pretty sure the bandits will sometimes randomly say, "look here, looks like we've got ourselves a hero!".

'Time to die, hero!'
They call you hero because they consider it rather brave to try your luck and fight them. Since they're so awesome and all.

And then we shatter their delusions of grandeur by either beheading them, or some other rather violent method of execution (oh, and if we feel like it, send their spirit to the soul cairn for eternity with our trusty Black Soul Gems or Black Star.)

Yeah this is the one I mean. I get that one all the time.

But it's weird.

If a burglar comes into your house and you're a buff bodybuilder with a sixpack, do you say "Lookie here, looks like we've got ourselves a hero!"
No you say "I'mma kick your ass burglar."

It comes off as awkward because some of those guys are in the middle of the woods, random caves or draugr dungeons. Pretty sure an explorer found you, not a hero, unless the bandits are truly THAT self-centered and love how evil they are that much.

They might as well just say "Look, it's the protagonist! Get him!!"

Ah! Now that you mention it...in those words. They do sound familiar. But they aren't too often, not that I can recall anyway, which isn't saying much...

Though I do sort of like the idea of every bandit being so comically self-obsessed to the point that he assumes every random traveler must be a bounty hunter and that he's the most wanted man in the world... :D

Because its pretty blatantly obvious that they're breaking the law - even to the dim-witted bandits. They rob travellers, attack caravans, steal food from farms and make their homes in caves, tombs and abandoned forts. I'd say they mean 'hero' in the sense that the 'white knight' is coming to protect the law and cut down those who break it.

They're hanging out in caves in the middle of nowhere. :U
And the raiders of FO3, raiding is kind of a social norm.

I can't say much about FO3 - I've never played a fallout game.
But surely bandits can travel, much like the player? I'd say it's fairly common for bandits to go out to the nearest village, rob them blind and return to their cave/crypt/fort. Even if we don't see it in game.

Yeah but that's why I call it comically self-obsessed of them that they consider EVERY person that happens into their cave to be a hero after an imaginary bounty on their head.
